A fun video from Anthony Watts&#8217; WUWT blog marvelously shows how the folly of such blind faith surfaces after careful scrutiny of those collective narratives. &#8220;<em>The Arctic is warming twice as rapidly as anywhere else<\/em> \u2026&#8221;? Oops. The &#8216;double-the-rate&#8217; seems to be <a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/world-warming-2xfaster.mp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">happening literally everywhere<\/a>. Back in 2012, blogger Tom Nelson illustrated how the places hardest hit by global warming \u2014 ground zero, according to screaming headlines \u2014 is, well \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/tomnelson.blogspot.com\/2012\/03\/settled-science-every-place-is-change.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">literally everywhere<\/a>. Oops. Over just the last year, headlines naming myriad different locations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22Climate+change%22+%22ground+zero%22&amp;source=lnt&amp;tbs=qdr:y&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiO44SatY3lAhWBLn0KHd8pBkIQpwUIJw&amp;biw=1403&amp;bih=778\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still scream the same way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Same thing applies to fear mongering narratives implying energy company industry executives pay &#8216;shill scientists&#8217; in a conspiracy to spread disinformation undercutting the supposedly settled science about CO2 pollution from burning fossil fuels.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I could have titled this post &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=8764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No matter where you go, there he is<\/a>, Redux,&#8221; or &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The first, the last, and the only accusation against skeptics<\/a>, Redux,&#8221; or &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The story of organized denial has been well-documented<\/a>, Redux.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The very latest case of acid redux of the &#8216;crooked skeptics \/ crooked fossil fuel industry accusation&#8217; popped up on September 27, 2019 in Canada&#8217;s CBC News online story, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/technology\/climate-change-denial-fossil-fuel-think-tank-sceptic-misinformation-1.5297236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How &#8216;organized climate change denial&#8217; shapes public opinion on global warming<\/a>.&#8221; Ironically, the piece is subheaded, &#8220;<em>Climate communication researchers say climate skepticism <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">is taking new form<\/span><\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How? According to the piece,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In some ways, the face of climate denial in political rhetoric has shifted,&#8221; said Matto Mildenberger, a Canadian climate policy researcher \u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It tends to be much more either, &#8216;We can&#8217;t do anything about it&#8217; or &#8216;It&#8217;s not important enough to do right away.'&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oops, no, that particular talking point about &#8216;shifting&#8217; material from skeptics is not new at all, but instead dates back nearly two decades among an assortment of other prominent repeaters, each <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">separated by only a degree or two from Ross Gelbspan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the article flies further off its own self-inflicted credibility cliff <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Dunlap-invest-acad-research.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with the following bits<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Over the last three decades, a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/global-warming-deniers-well-funded-99775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">investigative<\/span><\/a> news stories as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/socpro\/article-abstract\/50\/3\/348\/1617546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">academic<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/rsa.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/09644010802055576#.XYuzdC5KiUk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">research<\/span><\/a> revealed additional evidence of what <em>[environmental sociologist Riley]<\/em> Dunlap called &#8220;organized climate change denial.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Where does that first link go for the word &#8220;investigative&#8221;? To <em>Newsweek<\/em> reporter Sharon Begley&#8217;s August 13, 2007 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/global-warming-deniers-well-funded-99775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global-Warming Deniers: A Well-Funded Machine<\/a>&#8221; article in which she <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Newsweek-Begley-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">famously said<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Individual companies and industry associations \u2026formed lobbying groups with names like the Global Climate Coalition and the Information Council on the Environment. ICE&#8217;s game plan called for enlisting greenhouse doubters to &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">reposition global warming as theory rather than fact<\/span>,&#8221; and to sow doubt about climate research just as cigarette makers had about smoking research.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Where does the second link for the word &#8220;academic&#8221; go? To Riley Dunlap&#8217;s paper he co-authored with Aaron McCright titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/stephenschneider.stanford.edu\/Publications\/PDF_Papers\/McCrightDunlap2003.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Defeating Kyoto: The Conservative Movement\u2019s Impact on U.S. Climate Change Policy<\/a>&#8221; which <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/McCrightDunlap-03-Gelb-OA-1024x778.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cites<\/a>, regarding insinuations about &#8220;<em>skeptics with strong ties to industry,<\/em>&#8221; \u2026 guess who? <strong><em>That<\/em><\/strong> Gelbspan \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=4482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ozone Action<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/OA-Gelb-obtained-v2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Where does the CBC News article&#8217;s third link for the word &#8220;research&#8221; go? To a Jacques \/ Dunlap \/ Freeman paper which cites Gelbspan, Robert Brulle, and the usual assortment of what I term &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skeptic-trashing environmental sociologists<\/a>&#8221; who either <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Freudenburg-McCrightDunlap-1024x989.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cite each other<\/a> regarding evidence of a &#8216;fossil fuel industry climate misinformation machine,&#8217; or <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Jacques-Gelb.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gelbspan* directly<\/a> (* regarding Jacques&#8217; other refs to &#8216;journalist&#8217; Mooney there: <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Jacques-Mooney-refs.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">same citation cascade problem<\/a>). The CBC News article <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/CBC-JCook.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also cites<\/a> John Cook (no relation to me), the <em>same<\/em> John Cook who previously noted in one of his own pieces that, with regard to overall energy industry campaign efforts designed to confuse the public, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/8-18-17-Reposit-983x1024.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one example was<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026 the Western Fuels Association, a coal cooperative, spent half a million dollars on a <a href=\"ftp:\/\/ftp.borg.moe\/yarr\/Gentoomen%20Library\/Misc\/Cambridge.University.Press-How.Well.Do.Facts.Travel.2010.RETAiL.EBook.pdf#page=158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">misinformation campaign<\/a> designed to \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">reposition global warming as theory (not fact)<\/span>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Where does John Cook&#8217;s &#8220;misinformation campaign&#8221; link go to? An entire book chapter by Naomi Oreskes, whose <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/JCooks-Oreskes-AMS-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">page 139 citation<\/a> for &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; is to a place where <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/AMS-archivist2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nobody will ever find those memos<\/a>. But in another of her works, Oreskes <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Oreskes07ppt.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cites Gelbspan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern here is hard to miss.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s one the September 27, 2019 CBC News story could not resist repeating:<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/CBC-reposit.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I could go on at considerable length detailing faults \/ name connections elsewhere in this CBC News story (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Gelb-Leiserowitz.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leiserowitz<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Leiserowitz-Gelb-2003.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">enslavement<\/a>, Mildenberger&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Leiserowitz-Mildenberger.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">connection to Leiserowitz<\/a>, Mildenberger&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Mildenberger-false-equiv.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regurgitation<\/a> of <em>ye olde<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1886\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unneeded media balance<\/a> talking point, a.k.a. &#8220;creating <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Getler-false-equiv.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">false equivalency<\/a> for skeptics,&#8221; etc), having only a degree or three of separation from Ross Gelbspan. Of course, there&#8217;s also the overarching <strong><em>fatal faults<\/em><\/strong> regarding widespread enslavement to those <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=7477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worthless<\/a> &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; memos &#8230;. but readers probably already get the point by now.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s actually a huge point, one far larger than global warming science, involving what amounts to no less than the total abdication of the traditional news media profession to do their basic job of reporting the truth, and investigating storylines which don&#8217;t line up right under deeper examination. While this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/health\/kelly-crowe-1.2652805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBC News reporter<\/a> writes under a different system recognizing excellence in journalism, I&#8217;ve offered the suggestion to American reporters that none of them will ever win our top prize, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/page\/administration-prizes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Pulitzer<\/a>, for regurgitating decades old accusations about a skeptic scientists \/ fossil fuel industry executives conspiracy that&#8217;s riddled with holes from top to bottom, but one or a team of them <strong><em>could win<\/em><\/strong> a Pulitzer by turning the tables on whoever it is who feeds them this malarkey. (FYI, despite <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Blakemore-Gelb-PulitPhoto.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prominent accolades<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Schneider-Gelb-96-1024x845.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plural<\/a> &#8211; and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Fenton-Gelb.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hype<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GP-Gelb-Pulit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plural<\/a> &#8211; guess who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/search\/Gelbspan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">never won a Pulitzer<\/a>?)<\/p>\n<p>Same applies for whatever the top prize is for other reporters in their respective countries, because the same worthless accusation pops up <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Kiwi-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on the other side of the world as well<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The opportunity to objectively investigate even one minor element of the &#8216;crooked skeptics&#8217; accusation, ironically involving Gelbspan&#8217;s &#8216;tip of the iceberg&#8217; Pulitzer problem, was missed <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=4265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">back in 1997<\/a>, and it, along with numerous other red flag problems, are still being missed today, much like what is happening with other major political false premise situations. Borrowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\/daily\/2019\/10\/07\/democrat-2020-campaign-hinges-on-picking-off-a-few-republicans-to-vote-for-impeachment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">directly from Rush Limbaugh<\/a> who was <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Rush-reporter-career-triumph.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speaking about one of those others<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There is a gigantic career waiting to be made for one journalist. The truth is, it would destroy that career if that one journalist <strong>decided to write the truth about this<\/strong>. Isn\u2019t that amazing? That it would destroy their career to write the truth about this.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Woodward and Bernstein were unknown before their tough questions ultimately resulted in bringing down a U.S. President. They&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redstate.com\/diary\/russellc\/2012\/12\/04\/mainstream-media-malfeasance-showcased-in-benghazi-global-warming-reporting-wheres-woodward-bernstein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still M.I.A.<\/a>, so who will risk their career now to tell all the details, including the inconvenient truths, of the so-called &#8216;fossil fuel industry disinformation conspiracy,&#8217; which might ultimately bring down <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AnIncTr263-Reposit-Gelb2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a former Vice President<\/a> and the entire global warming issue?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Enviro-activists put all their faith in the notion that their superficial, repetitive fear mongering narratives about man-caused catastrophic global warming will never be questioned by the greater public.
