{"id":8812,"date":"2019-07-31T15:56:45","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T22:56:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=8812"},"modified":"2024-04-22T21:29:55","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T04:29:55","slug":"wait-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=8812","title":{"rendered":"Wait \u2026 what?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a small thing \u2014 I&#8217;ve already suggested (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>) the inconsistencies between Ross Gelbspan and other people regarding the exact start date for his so-called &#8216;revelation of corporate-corrupted skeptic climate scientists&#8217; are worthy of deeper questioning.<\/p>\n<p>Throw another gasoline-soaked problem into that dumpster fire.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I hadn&#8217;t picked up the significance of the arguably contradictory problem I&#8217;m covering in this post until I was finishing <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=8764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my July 11, 2019 post<\/a>, with its specific bit highlighting the way Ross Gelbspan <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Exposed-v-Obtained.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">changed his tune<\/a> on his narrative about the first-time reporting of the (*ahem* for emphasis: <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=7477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>worthless<\/em><\/strong><\/a>) memos falsely attributed to the Western Fuels Association&#8217;s Information Council for the Environment (ICE) public relations campaign, which supposedly had the strategy goal to &#8220;<em>reposition global warming as theory rather than fact&#8221;<\/em> in the public eye by targeting &#8220;<em>older, less educated males and <\/em><em>younger, lower-income women.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gelbspan has offered basically two narratives about the way they came into public view:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8216;strategy documents that were exposed in media&#8217; \u2014 e.g. in <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gelb-Atlantic-June-98.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his <em>The Atlantic<\/em><\/a> article, and in <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/THeIo-ICE-exposed-by-papers.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his own website page<\/a> about the event.<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;strategy papers I obtained&#8217; \u2014 e.g. statements seen in <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/OA-Gelb-obtained-v2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the old Ozone Action group<\/a>\u2019s page about it, in Gelbspan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gelb-Snowed-WFA2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Mother Jones<\/em><\/a> article, and more vaguely, the interview he had with <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/PbsNow-Gelb-got-gathered-ICE.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PBS Now<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But the Mother Jones version includes three additional potentially troublesome words: &#8220;<em>strategy papers I obtained<\/em> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>at the time<\/em><\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At the time of what?? As I&#8217;ve detailed in <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my May 9, 2014 post<\/a>, there&#8217;s little doubt about Gelbspan&#8217;s setup prior to that claim, regarding his self-described timeline for his foray into examining the &#8216;industry-funded \/ orchestrated lies from skeptic climate scientists&#8217;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Spring of 1995 while enjoying full retirement from his former newspaper editing job, he was asked by Harvard\u2019s Dr Paul Epstein to co-author a <em>Washington Post<\/em> article on how global warming was a factor in spreading diseases. It was published March 19, 1995.<\/li>\n<li>A backlash of letters to <em>WashPo<\/em> prompted Gelbspan to look into the work of skeptic climate scientists.<\/li>\n<li>Despite being fully retired, he somehow had pre-scheduled interviews with &#8216;mainstream scientists,&#8217; and at least one of them offered him the notion that skeptic scientists had questionable industry-sourced funding.<\/li>\n<li>He subsequently learned \u2014 never offering an explanation of how \u2014 that four skeptic climate scientists would be testifying at a Minnesota Public Utilities Hearing on global warming science on May 22, 1995.<\/li>\n<li>He somehow succeeded \u2014 also never offering an explanation of how \u2014 in prompting one of the &#8216;<em>attorney generals handling the hearing<\/em>\u2019 to compel the scientists to disclose their funding sources. Voil\u00e0! This <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/MAnn-Michaels-63-grand.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">supposedly revealed<\/a> one of the most notorious sources as the Western Fuels Association, which the equally notorious <strong><em>non-<\/em><\/strong>ICE PR campaign &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em> \/ <em>older, less educated males<\/em> \u2026 <em>younger, lower-income women<\/em>&#8221; strategy\/targeting &#8216;memos&#8217; are falsely attributed to.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026. And Gelbspan was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PwJuE_0ZdJs&amp;t=712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the only reporter in the hearing room<\/a> to witness this revelation and report about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Report, he did, <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong> at any news organization as an employed or otherwise freelance reporter, but instead in his own November <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gelb-reports-WFA-Harpers-1024x715.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1995 <em>Harper&#8217;s Magazine<\/em> article<\/a>, and subsequently in his own 1997 &#8220;The Heat is On&#8221; book \u2026.. where, at the bottom of page 34 and continuing on to page 35, after having spelled out the allegedly Western Fuels ICE memo&#8217;s strategy\/targeting goals, he unmistakably <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/THiO-expose-by-enviros-to-press-copy-1024x498.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The ICE campaign had barely gathered momentum when it was exposed by environmentalists, who provided information about it to the media. Several embarrassing news articles led to the ICE&#8217;s demise.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gelbspan&#8217;s &#8220;The Heat is Online&#8221; website elaborates just a little more, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">erroneously<\/a>, regarding two of the media publications:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The ICE program was discontinued when it was exposed by a trade paper, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Energy Daily<\/span>, as well as by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The National Journal<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Arizona Republic<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The New York Times<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He was referring to Mary O&#8217;Driscoll\u2019s June 24, 1991 <em>The Energy Daily<\/em> article titled &#8220;Greenhouse ads target &#8216;low income&#8217; women, &#8216;less educated&#8217; men\u201d (corroborated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science-bbs.com\/98-environment\/20c4f17328434d4a.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an Eco Geneva newsletter<\/a> dated June 25, 1991 containing extracts both from the <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/EcoGeneva-strat-target2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;leaked memos&#8217; themselves<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/EcoGeneva-ODriscoll2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from her article<\/a>; and to a Greenwire (which was absorbed years later by <em>The National Journal<\/em>) <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Greenwire-date-ICE-targ.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 20, 1991 report<\/a>; and to a May 24, 1991 <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AZ-Daily-Sun-1024x501.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Arizona <strong>Daily Sun<\/strong><\/em> article<\/a> which only referred generally to the Western Fuels ICE campaign; and finally to the <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/NYTrepositSierraC.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 8, 1991 <em>NYT<\/em> article<\/a> about the memos being provided to the newspaper by the Sierra Club<\/p>\n<p>See the problem? Re-read his words from <em>Mother Jones<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gelb-MJones-at-the-time.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Western Fuels, then a $400 million coal cooperative, declared in its annual report that it was enlisting several scientists who were skeptical about climate change\u2014Patrick Michaels, Robert Balling, and S. Fred Singer\u2014as spokesmen. The coal industry paid these and a handful of other skeptics some $1 million over a three-year period and sent them around the country to speak to the press and the public. According to internal strategy papers <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I obtained at the time<\/span>, the purpose of the campaign was &#8220;to reposition global warming as theory (not fact)&#8221; \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If Gelbspan had no knowledge prior to the Spring of 1995 about skeptic climate scientists being paid coal industry money, how could he possibly receive the leaked memos <strong>at the time<\/strong> of the demise of the ICE campaign in 1991? Even if we allow some quite generous leeway about the skeptics being &#8216;<em>sent around the country over a three-year period<\/em>\u2019 &#8211; 1992, 1993, 1994 &#8211; that still places Gelbspan&#8217;s receipt of the memos upwards of 6 months or more (worse for &#8217;91-&#8217;92-&#8217;93) prior to his claim about being alerted to the &#8216;industry funding&#8217; of skeptic climate scientists. <strong><em>That<\/em><\/strong> earlier receipt time essentially corroborates <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Lancaster-Gelb-94.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other people&#8217;s assertions<\/a> about Gelbspan beginning his examination of this situation at least <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Leggett-Gelb-Apr-97.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a year prior<\/a> to his own publicly stated start of it.<\/p>\n<p>Borrowing once again from the courtroom drama movie &#8220;A Few Good Men&#8221; (see the end of <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=3431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my December 22, 2015 post<\/a> on a separate &#8216;crooked skeptics&#8217; accusation narrative similarly going off the rails) to illustrate the point here \u2026\u2026..<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Captain Ross:<\/em> Private, the week of 2 September, the switch log has you down at post 39 until 16:00, is that correct?<br \/>\n<em>Private Downey:<\/em> &#8220;I&#8217;m sure it is, sir, they keep that log pretty good.<br \/>\n<em>Capt. Ross:<\/em> How far is it from Post 39 to the Windward barracks?<br \/>\n<em>Pfc Downey:<\/em> Oh, it&#8217;s a ways, sir. It&#8217;s a hike.<br \/>\n\u2026<br \/>\n<em>Capt. Ross:<\/em> You ever had to walk it?<br \/>\n<em>Pfc Downey:<\/em> Yes, sir, that day, sir. Friday. \u2026 The pickup private got a flat tire, sir, right at 39 \u2026 we had to double time it back to the barracks.<br \/>\n<em>Capt. Ross:<\/em> And if it&#8217;s 10 or 15 minutes by jeep, I&#8217;m guessing it must be a good an hour by foot, am I right?<br \/>\n<em>Pfc Downey:<\/em> Pick-up and me did it in 45 flat, sir.<br \/>\n<em>Capt. Ross:<\/em> Not bad. Now, you&#8217;ve said that your assault on Private Santiago was a result of an order that Lieutenant Kendrick gave you in your barracks room <strong>at 16:20<\/strong>, am I right?<br \/>\n<em>Pfc Downey:<\/em> Yes, sir.<br \/>\n<em>Capt. Ross:<\/em> But <strong>you just said you didn&#8217;t get back to the Windward barracks until 16:45<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<em>Pfc Downey:<\/em> Sir?<br \/>\n<em>Capt. Ross:<\/em> Well, if you didn&#8217;t make it back to the barracks until 16:45, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">how could you be in your room at 16:20?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2026\u2026.. if your goal is to maintain credibility regarding your presentation of an overall storyline, none of the players involved in it can can plow into their own self-created &#8220;<em>wait\u2026what?<\/em>&#8221; narrative derailments which cause people to wonder if the whole story is a fabrication.<\/p>\n<p>Why would there be any need to for a person to apparently fabricate a story about the way <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=5917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">she<\/a> entered into an examination of corrupt activity? Perhaps because a &#8220;Plan A&#8221; attack on skeptic climate scientists went bad <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=6997\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and the &#8216;attacker&#8217; had to be cut loose<\/a>, thus the new attackers could never disclose that they were <em>ordered<\/em> to carry out the attack, one which otherwise could destroy the legacy of their commander because it violates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?&amp;q=thou+shalt+not+bear+false+witness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of the most basic moral codes of conduct<\/a> there is.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Implied Orders\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GwoW2G3Cw-A?start=27&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a small thing \u2014 I&#8217;ve already suggested (e.g. here and here) the inconsistencies between Ross Gelbspan and other people regarding the exact start date for his so-called &#8216;revelation of corporate-corrupted skeptic climate scientists&#8217; are worthy of deeper questioning.
