{"id":865,"date":"2013-08-30T12:59:53","date_gmt":"2013-08-30T19:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=865"},"modified":"2018-01-31T12:37:14","modified_gmt":"2018-01-31T19:37:14","slug":"three-degrees-of-separation-or-less-part-iii-the-moral-imperative-to-stop-global-warming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=865","title":{"rendered":"Three Degrees of Separation or Less, Part III:  The Moral Imperative to Stop Global Warming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A good Christian would no doubt feel a moral imperative to be a good steward of the planet and fight global warming, particularly when told immoral people with evil self interests are causing the harm and impeding the cure\u2026\u2026. unless that Christian was to start questioning whether the bit about &#8216;immoral people with evil self interests&#8217; has a leg to stand on. Now, suddenly, there is a moral dilemma.<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So which is the bigger sin?\u00a0 Failing to stop a so-called global warming crisis which has increasing credibility problems with its underlying science assessments, or breaking the 9th Commandment in order to be sure <em>[skeptic]<\/em> scientists&#8217; criticisms aren&#8217;t taken seriously?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That is the question I asked at the end of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/2010\/12\/the_case_of_the_curious_climat.html \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my December 2010 article<\/a> about my look into what was prompting religious communities to feel a need for involvement in the global warming issue. At that time, having spent a year learning who comprised the small cast of characters at the heart of the smear of skeptic scientists, I quickly recognized <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[ <\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Stembridge-Radford-unIDd.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two co-authors<\/a> of material being <a href=\"http:\/\/interfaithpowerandlight.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/BottomLine_5P.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">distributed among religious organizations<\/a> who were from the old Ozone Action enviro-activist group &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/WebCite-Ozone-Action-staffjpg-1024x752.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Radford<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Stembridge-OA.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Anderson Stembridge<\/a>. Funny how Radford in particular didn&#8217;t identify himself in the material as the then-executive director of Greenpeace. Even more entertaining was how I had to <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Radford-minus-OA.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amend my 2010 article<\/a> to point out how Radford&#8217;s Greenpeace bio page had erased the reference to him working at Ozone Action. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">]* *<em>Author&#8217;s 6\/8\/17 clarification:<\/em> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>material within these red brackets was updated with links that ceased to function; Stembridge is additionally detailed<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> in <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=3098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my 2015 post<\/a> about Radford<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If anyone digs further into what I was detailing at that article, Sally Bingham and Interfaith Power and Light, you soon find a photo of her and \u2026 guess who? Ross Gelbspan (pg 4 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seedcoalition.org\/pdf\/CEMwin01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at this PDF file<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/binggelb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-866\" src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/binggelb-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"binggelb\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/binggelb-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/binggelb-439x300.jpg 439w, https:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/binggelb.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ms Bingham was seen more recently in a joint <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2012\/12\/23\/1370971\/faith-and-science-a-climate-scientist-and-religious-organizer-on-the-urgency-of-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Faith And Science&#8221; interview<\/a> with another person who has gained fame from the idea of a moral imperative to fight global warming, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/politicalscience\/Faculty\/Hayhoe_Katharine.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Katharine Hayhoe<\/a>, director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University. Prior to that, Dr Hayhoe appeared on the PBS Frontline &#8220;Climate of Doubt&#8221; program. This is somewhat problematic, Frontline&#8217;s program basically had the appearance of being a thinly veiled attempt to portray skeptic climate scientists and the organizations they associate with as being tainted by fossil fuel industry funding. Frontline&#8217;s direct response to <a href=\"http:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2012\/11\/17\/frontline-responds-to-complaints-about-oct-23-climate-of-doubt-here-the-rebuttal-to-frontline-that-pbs-ombudsman-wont-put-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my inquiry about that and their subsequent failure to speak any further about it<\/a> did nothing to belay that appearance, particularly when their &#8220;<em>author of a well-documented book on Exxon<\/em>&#8221; turns out to have relied on information offered by Greenpeace&#8217;s Kert Davies, yet another alumnus of the old Ozone Action group from the time when Gelbspan was associated with it.<\/p>\n<p>But Dr Hayhoe also had a prior appearance on <del><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/nova\/secretlife\/scientists\/katharine-hayhoe\/show\/chat-katharine-hayhoe-tonight-7pm-et\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a PBS Nova web site&#8217;s live Q &amp; A session<\/a><\/del>,<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span><\/strong> where she offered the words below (click to enlarge)<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">**<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<em>[<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">See author&#8217;s added notes<\/span> below]<\/em> in response to the host asking &#8220;<em>What do you think is the motivation of the people who try to stir up the fear? Why would anyone have an interest in denying climate change?<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/hayhoenova-2011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-867\" src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/hayhoenova-2011-300x185.jpg\" alt=\"hayhoenova 2011\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/hayhoenova-2011-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/hayhoenova-2011-484x300.jpg 484w, https:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/hayhoenova-2011.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She and scores of other people can advise us to &#8220;follow the money&#8221; until doomsday comes, it is a fruitless exercise if no evidence is found to prove evil intentions on the part of skeptics, made worse if whatever amount of money donated to skeptics can&#8217;t be disproved as being given solely because the donors simply agreed with what was being said. More enlightening is the exercise to follow her accusation.<\/p>\n<p>It comes from neither Hoggan&#8217;s book nor the Oreskes \/ Conway book. Hoggan lavishly praises Gelbspan in his book, but rather than cite him directly <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/AnIncT-263.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as Al Gore did<\/a>, he instead <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Hog-Oresk.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cites Oreskes<\/a>, who <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Oreskes07ppt.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cites Gelbspan&#8217;s 2004 &#8220;Boiling Point&#8221;<\/a> book, in which Gelbspan himself <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gelb-Gelb.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cites his 1997 &#8220;The Heat is On&#8221;<\/a> book. And his &#8217;97 book <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gelb-ICE.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cited the original Western Fuels ICE memos<\/a>, which <strong><em>no skeptic accuser<\/em><\/strong> has bothered to show to the public in any reasonably complete fashion for over 22 years &#8211; with one <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">very recent and possibly not-thought-out exception<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For promoters of man-caused global warming, they&#8217;ve put all their faith into assuming skeptics&#8217; associations with the fossil fuel industry &#8211; however tenuous &#8211; renders the skeptics untrustworthy. But the associations are meaningless and irrelevant without evidence to prove they are damaging.<\/p>\n<p>The associations I point to among the\u00a0man-caused global warming promoters is really just a secondary problem, with the relevance being simply to amplify the core problem:\u00a0 nobody corroborates the corruption accusation against skeptic scientists, and it has been devoid of evidence to prove it true from its inception.<br \/>\n&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<br \/>\n<em>[<\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>* **<\/strong><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Author&#8217;s 1\/31\/18 addition<\/span>: It was brought to my attention recently that my screencapture of Dr Hayhoe&#8217;s Live Chat comments appeared to be a &#8220;<\/em>a shoddy facsimile of the actual site<em>&#8221; and that her remarks were otherwise &#8220;<\/em>not sourced<em>&#8221; despite my link to the PBS Nova web page where the remarks originally came from. On August 30, 2013 when I wrote this blog post, the PBS Nova page looked exactly like what I show in my screencapture. But as most internet-savvy people know, website owners update\/change the appearance of their pages, which explains why the current result seen from clicking on the PBS Nova page yields such different results. While my original link remains functional, I&#8217;ve now lined through it and now additionally offer these additional links: 1) an Internet Archive link to the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130708193211\/http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/nova\/secretlife\/scientists\/katharine-hayhoe\/show\/chat-katharine-hayhoe-tonight-7pm-et\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2013-era PBS Nova page<\/a>, which has the now-non-functioning Live Chat window; 2) a link to another site&#8217;s capture of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coveritlive.com\/index2.php?option=com_altcaster&amp;task=viewaltcast&amp;altcast_code=1b079fb678&amp;ipod=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full context set<\/a> of Live Chat remarks; and 3) screencaptures for posterity of both the <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Arch-Nova-Hayhoe.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archive page<\/a> and Live Chat capture page <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/CoverItLive-Hayhoe.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">where the relevant remarks from Dr Hayhoe are seen<\/a> \u2026.. the latter two having web addresses at the top of each.
