“A big-money Catholic group just said it’s yanking all of its cash out of fossil fuels<\/a>” — that was the headline of an early October 2017 CNBC News headline, referring to the Global Catholic Climate Movement organization (GCCM). With barely more than a glimpse at a quote within the article about “we feel strongly responsible to participate in tackling the issue of climate change<\/em><\/a>,” I could already guess where this group was headed and who they relied on for their diatribe about the global warming issue.<\/p>\n

The disappointing thing is, they didn’t disappoint on what my guesses might be. Starting at their home page<\/a>, a recirculating series of photos includes backlit steam clouds<\/a> from a power plant stack, arguably outright mischaracterization<\/a> of what “greenhouse gas emissions” from such plants really are.<\/p>\n

In rummaging around the GCCM site, I found this page<\/a> with its “Online Sources” ‘section’s reference to the Skeptical Science website<\/a> as one that “removes the politics from the debate by concentrating solely on the science.<\/em>” Take the time to ask multiple skeptic scientists \/ expert global warming issue speakers about the\u00a0Skeptical Science site, and they will say SkS is one of the more disingenuous pushers of science misinformation out there, which includes its own name. SkS was caught attempting to delete their own content<\/a> in which they lampooned prominent skeptics, and for some odd reason, depicted their site administrator John Cook (no relation to me) as a WWII German SS officer. Worse than that, SkS was caught deleting science material<\/a><\/strong> which undermined their viewpoints.<\/p>\n

Does GCCM condone this kind of behavior? But there’s more, namely the reference<\/a> not far below GCCM’s SkS reference:<\/p>\n

I’ve already detailed the way Desmog’s founder\u00a0James Hoggan essentially torpedoes his site’s entire existence<\/a> with the way he first admits he knows nothing about climate science, but is certain that skeptic climate scientists are liars, the latter of which he derives entirely from Ross Gelbspan, the “Pulitzer-winning investigator” who Al Gore says<\/a> discovered the supposedly leaked Western Fuels Association “Information Council for the Environment” (ICE) PR campaign’s sinister strategy to “reposition <\/em>global warm<\/em>ing as theory rather than fact<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

Funny how Gelbspan’s 1997 book attributes that strategy phrase<\/a> and targeting phrases to Western Fuels, while Gore said in 2008<\/a> that it was an Exxon strategy, despite his own acknowledgement in his 1992 book<\/a> that the memos came from a coal company. And let’s not forget how Gelbspan swapped the name of one of the people he accused<\/a> between the hardcover and paperback<\/a> versions of his book connected with those memos. Plus, Gelbspan never won a Pulitzer<\/a>. Meanwhile what did SkS administrator John Cook imply was smoking gun evidence of skeptic climate scientists’ guilt, as recently as August 2017? You guessed it<\/a>. No matter how often it is repeated, however, the memo collection crumbles<\/a> as evidence of an industry-wide pay-for-performance conspiracy arrangement between skeptic climate scientists and fossil fuel company executives.<\/p>\n

Does the GCCM condone that kind of behavior, too?<\/p>\n

GCCM loves devout Christian AGW scientist<\/a> Katharine Hayhoe … the person who cited James Hoggan’s and Naomi Oreskes’ books<\/a> to say skeptic climate scientists are crooks. Hoggan’s book cites Oreskes<\/a> for the “reposition global warming<\/em>” leaked memos; Oreskes cites Gelbspan’s 2004 “Boiling Point” book<\/a> for them. Gelbspan cites his 1997 book<\/a>, saying the memos are ‘in his possession<\/a>.’ But he has never<\/em><\/strong> disclosed how, where, and why he “obtained<\/a>” them.<\/p>\n

Does the GCCM condone that kind of convoluted and inexplicable misdirection?<\/p>\n

Then there’s GCCM’s bits with Oreskes<\/a>. Check out the last three paragraphs on this page<\/a>, where accusatory things are stated<\/a> about Western Fuels’ CEO, Fred Palmer. They cite Oreskes’ “Merchants of Doubt” book regarding an assertion about a particular Western Fuels ICE campaign advertisement which literally does not appear anywhere in her book<\/em><\/strong>. Oreskes actually wrote about this elsewhere (including the ICE ad<\/a>), and as detailed by Ron Arnold<\/a>, she put out misinformation about where those ‘leaked reposition global warm<\/em>ing<\/em>‘ memos came from while also falsely saying where they were archived<\/a>. But look what it says in the paragraph above<\/a> Oreskes’ bit:<\/p>\n

…Palmer had a record of attacking mainstream climate science<\/span> that stretches back more than 20 years ….<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Those are basically Ross Gelbspan’s words — watch this interview starting at the 3:56 point<\/a>. I’ve already\u00a0proved that Gelbspan’s accusation about what was in WFA annual reports<\/a> is false. No need for genuine journalists trust me on this, they may ask Mr Palmer themselves<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Does the GCCM condone this level of misinformation from all the sources they hold dear on the topic of corrupted skeptic climate scientists? Does the Pope?<\/p>\n

The future of the issue could hang entirely on this point. Pope Francis may literally not be aware of the skeptic side of the global warming issue. Paraphrasing what I’ve said on Twitter in one variation<\/a> or another<\/a> (reworking the old Indy 500 racetrack axiom about two kinds of drivers there, “those who’ve hit the wall and those who will hit the wall”):<\/p>\n

There are only two kinds of people on Earth; skeptics of catastrophic man-caused global warming, and those who’d become skeptics of that idea after reading the migraine headache-inducing levels of science detail within assessment reports from skeptic climate scientists<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The non-skeptic side simply got to him first<\/a> (full text here<\/a>), and among those, Naomi Oreskes was influential enough to get her name on the cover<\/a> of the book version of Pope Francis’ Encyclical. Do a GoogleBooks search of the Pope’s book for the word “tobacco”, and the one place it appears is square within the biography paragraph<\/a> for Oreskes – as in “Merchants of Doubt: “How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth<\/span> on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

This, coming from a historian who apparently needs some kind of time travel ability<\/a> in order for her tale to be plausible regarding her discovery of who her ‘tobacco-associated critics’ were, and this overall concern coming from a side of the issue which doesn’t merely believe global warming mitigation efforts are just a sensible thing to do, there’s a moral imperative to stop those who are committing crimes against humanity<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We assume Pope Francis is a clergyman who holds the pursuit of Truth in the highest regard. Imagine the fallout if he was to become fully informed about Oreskes, Al Gore, Ross Gelbspan, and so many others on that side of the issue who deceived the public when they seemingly obscured the collective truth about skeptic climate scientists. The moral imperative to stop global warming might not merely strike out, Pope Francis could implode it in the most epic manner imaginable in a showcase of how the public was deceived by people who apparently broke the commandment about bearing false witness<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
