{"id":10508,"date":"2020-07-24T16:41:57","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T23:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=10508"},"modified":"2021-03-26T16:00:47","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T23:00:47","slug":"the-big-ben-santer-problem-pt-2-the-gelbspan-connection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=10508","title":{"rendered":"The Big Ben Santer Problem, Pt 2: The Gelbspan Connection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Near the middle of my <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=10283\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 17, 2020 Part 1 blog post<\/a> about the Oreskes \/ Santer problem, I showed <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/THiO-Nation-Gelb.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a screencapture<\/a> of Ross Gelbspan&#8217;s connection with the tale concerning atmospheric scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/pcmdi.llnl.gov\/staff\/santer\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Santer<\/a>\u2019s questionable alterations of an IPCC report, and then showed featured another screencapture of a different tale in a major in a major national magazine article which had Gelbspan&#8217;s favorite &#8216;leaked memos&#8217; accusation separated only sentences away from the &#8216;Santer attack.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>That wasn&#8217;t the only major article written at that time <em>in that particular manner<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First for comparison, have a look again at the December 16, 1996 <em>The Nation<\/em> article&#8217;s passages about Santer and the &#8220;reposition global warming as theory&#8221; leaked memo phrase.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/The-Nation-Santer-reposit.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was published a year before Gelbspan made the phrase internationally famous <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/THio-pg-34.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in his &#8220;The Heat is On&#8221; book<\/a>, but it was only months after he and the old Ozone Action group <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/OA-Gelb-obtained-v2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">magically &#8216;obtained&#8217; those memos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, compare what was seen at <em>The Nation<\/em> in December 1996 to this <strong>August<\/strong> 1996 <em>Physics Today<\/em> &#8220;Attacks on IPCC Report Heat Controversy Over Global Warming&#8221; article (unfortunately only viewable as photo scans &#8211; 1st page <a href=\"https:\/\/physicstoday.scitation.org\/na101\/home\/literatum\/publisher\/aip\/journals\/content\/pto\/1996\/pto.1996.49.issue-8\/1.2807720\/production\/1.2807720.fp.png_v03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>, 2nd <a href=\"https:\/\/physicstoday.scitation.org\/na101\/home\/literatum\/publisher\/aip\/journals\/content\/pto\/1996\/pto.1996.49.issue-8\/1.2807721\/production\/1.2807721.fp.png_v03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>) which tells the overall story of Ben Santer&#8217;s role in altering the IPCC Chapter 8 text and the outcry from critics about that situation. I highlight the relevant connection here (the orange color box is in the original article):<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Phys-Santer-Gelb-1024x954.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Basically, the tale boils down to the good guy scientist &#8211; Ben Santer &#8211; and the bad guys &#8211; the Global Climate Coalition (GCC) and its allies in the fossil fuel industry. How do we know the GCC are the bad guys? This <em>Physics Today<\/em> said they attack both the science and its scientists \u2026 &#8220;<em>according to an article in last December&#8217;s Harper&#8217;s Magazine<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What article is that? It&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/19990116224732\/http:\/www.sierraclub.org\/global-warming\/harpers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Heat is On: The Warming of the World\u2019s Climate Sparks a Blaze of Denial<\/a>\u201d by guess who? Ross Gelbspan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Gelb-Harpers-GCC-ornaments-1024x646.jpg\" width=\"598\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, Gelbspan described in his 1997 &#8220;The Heat is On&#8221; book how <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Gelb-Santer-OKeefe-Pearlman-654x1024.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he personally attended<\/a> the 1996 U.S. Global Change Research Program <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/USGCRP-5-21-96-Santer.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">day 2 seminar<\/a> on the Santer \/ IPCC SPM discussion where Ben Santer was harshly questioned about his alteration to the &#8216;final&#8217; IPCC report by GCC representative William O&#8217;Keefe and Donald Pearlman, a rep for &#8220;<em>undisclosed coal and oil producers<\/em>.&#8221; Gelbspan <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/THiO-Santer-Gelb-typo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">typo&#8217;d the date<\/a> of briefing as being a year earlier than it was in his book&#8217;s notes section, but from that error, we now are led to wonder if <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Gelb-Pearlman-IPCC-quote.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a quote seen later in Gelbspan&#8217;s book<\/a> from Pearlman is also a typo, or did Gelbspan actually speak directly to Pearlman <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Gelb-Pearlman-phone-interview.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">back in early August 199<strong>5<\/strong><\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Also keep in mind that Ross Gelbspan has stated that he was <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/HiOnline-Gelb-retired.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fully retired from the news media in 1992<\/a>, and within a questionable timeline <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spanning from just mid-March 1995 to mid-May 1995<\/a>, he switched from being an believer in man-caused global warming to a skeptic and back again to a believer when he was mysteriously alerted about and personally attended a Minnesota Public Utilities hearing where skeptic climate scientists disclosed their funding.<\/p>\n<p>How does it work out that a private citizen retiree would \u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be invited out-of-the-blue to <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">co-author a <em>Washington Post<\/em> article<\/a> with a Harvard Medical School doctor on the spread of infectious disease, a topic he knew absolutely nothing about, in the early spring of 1995, and &#8230;.<\/li>\n<li>be mysteriously alerted to the above-noted May 1995 Minnesota Public Utilities hearing and be readily received as someone <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1262\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">offering questioning advise to no less than the Attorney General in charge of the hearing<\/a>, and &#8230;.<\/li>\n<li>end up with enough &#8216;reporting clout&#8217; enabling him to conduct a telephone interview with Donald Pearlman just barely two and a half months after that May 1995 hearing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Or if Gelbspan did typo the date of the phone interview and it was actually August 7, 1996, did Gelbspan&#8217;s knowledge of who Pearlman was come from the perks of being somehow associated with &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=3227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greenpeace USA n\u00e9e Ozone Action<\/a>,&#8221; the little group that was gathering <a href=\"https:\/\/research.greenpeaceusa.org\/?a=view&amp;d=4222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">material about Pearlman as early as perhaps June 1996<\/a>, the same little group seen sometime in 1996-&#8217;97 partnering with him in mysteriously &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/OA-Gelb-obtained-v2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">obtaining<\/a>\u2019 the infamous set of leaked &#8220;reposition global warming&#8221; \/ &#8220;lower income males&#8221; memos <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/MN-v-API-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that are a cornerstone<\/a> of the currently weeks old <em>Minnesota v API, Exxon<\/em> global warming lawsuit&#8217;s efforts to claim skeptic climate scientists colluded with fossil fuel industry officials in deliberate disinformation campaigns?<\/p>\n<p>Naomi Oreskes is entangled<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>**<\/strong><\/span> in this. Who did she cite within her &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Merchants_of_Doubt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Merchants of Doubt<\/a>&#8221; book&#8217;s lengthy Chapter 6 on &#8220;The Denial of Global Warming,&#8221; regarding the <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/MoDoubt-Santer-Lahsen-1024x797.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;attack&#8217; of Ben Santer by William O&#8217;Keefe and Donald Pearlman<\/a>? <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/MoDoubt-Gelb-Lahsen-1024x688.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Gelbspan<\/a> \u2014 and notice also in that screencapture that Oreskes cited a part of anthropologist Myanna Lahsen&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Lahsen-Chap-8-1024x736.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">24 page book chapter<\/a> devoted to the topic of Santer&#8217;s notorious alteration of words within the IPCC Chapter 8. That book chapter contained the same Santer situation &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Lahsen-Seitz-singled-1024x544.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">word-for-word in some passages<\/a> &#8211; that Lahsen detailed <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Lahsen-PhD-Santer.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in her 1998 PhD dissertation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oreskes has cited Lahsen&#8217;s PhD dissertation <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Lahsen-Oreskes-05-07.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at least as far back as 2007<\/a> and in multiple other instances in other publications, but didn&#8217;t go straight to the original source for her above citation in &#8220;Merchants of Doubt&#8221; about the Santer &#8216;attack&#8217; event. Lahsen&#8217;s 24 page book chapter does include a mention of <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Lahsen-Gelbspan-ICE-1024x556.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Gelbspan and the notorious &#8220;Information Council for the Environment&#8221; PR campaign<\/a>, but not the the &#8220;reposition global warming&#8221; \/ &#8220;older, less-educated males&#8221; \/ &#8220;younger, lower-income women&#8221; strategy \/ targeting memo phrases which are <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=7477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">falsely attributed<\/a> to the ICE campaign. However, readers <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lahsen-ICEquotes.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can&#8217;t miss them in her PhD dissertation<\/a>, or miss her <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lahsen-Gelb-11-95.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">November 1995 personal meeting with Gelbspan<\/a> \u2026 who, by the way, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/search\/Gelbspan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">never won a Pulitzer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>[<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>**<\/strong> Author&#8217;s 11\/11\/20 addition<\/span>: Oreskes&#8217; &#8220;Merchants of Doubt&#8221; co-author Erik Conway is also entangled in this. Prior to the 2010 publication of their book, Conway published his own &#8220;Atmospheric Science at NASA: A History&#8221; book, where he briefly detailed the so-called &#8216;attacks&#8217; on Ben Santer. Who were his sources on the &#8216;attacks&#8217; details? <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Conway-Gelb-Stevens-Santer-attack-1024x627.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Gelbspan<\/a> and William Stevens, whose source for his own tiny bit about Santer is \u2026\u2026 wait for it \u2026\u2026\u2026.\u2026\u2026\u2026. <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Stevens-Santer-Gelb-1024x670.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Gelbspan<\/a>.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I offer no answers to this whole situation, but I can point to obvious questions that are in serious need of answering.<\/p>\n<p>What possible mechanism propels a years-retired reporter to be &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Gelb-only-reporter.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>the only reporter in the room<\/em><\/a>&#8221; at a very obscure May 1995 Public Utilities hearing where skeptic climate scientists were compelled to reveal their funding, which is otherwise irrelevant as a revelation <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=3929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">if no corruption is seen<\/a> as the result of it? Was he also the &#8216;only reporter in the briefing room&#8217; to witness Ben Santer being visibly shaken by questioning from industry-associated people, and what series of efforts landed him at that obscure U.S. House briefing? How does it work out that he would be so easily able to conduct a phone interview with one of those industry-associated people afterward, while also being available for a personal meeting with an anthropology student who would have likely never known a thing about him a month before his big December 1995 <em>Harper&#8217;s<\/em> &#8220;The Heat is On&#8221; article was published?
