{"id":919,"date":"2013-09-20T15:58:24","date_gmt":"2013-09-20T22:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=919"},"modified":"2024-05-09T12:56:00","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T19:56:00","slug":"the-company-you-keep-kalee-kreider-ozone-actions-creator-al-gores-long-time-spokesperson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=919","title":{"rendered":"The Company You Keep: Kalee Kreider, Ozone Action&#8217;s &#8220;Creator&#8221; \/ Al Gore&#8217;s Long-Time Spokesperson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Credit Ross Gelbspan for apparently consolidating the brilliant 3-point set of talking points that have arguably kept the global warming issue alive all this time, (1) <em>the science is settled<\/em>; (2) <em>skeptic scientists are paid by fossil fuel industries to &#8216;reposition global warming as theory rather than fact&#8217;<\/em>; (3) <em>journalists are not obligated to give equal time to those skeptics because of points 1 and 2<\/em>. But that mantra would have been worthless without a network of associates spreading it wherever and whenever they could. First up on that list, Kalee Kreider. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For each piece in this particular series of &#8220;The Company You Keep&#8221; I&#8217;ll try to keep them moderately brief, detailing various highlights of people having close ties to Gelbspan. Be assured, there&#8217;s much more to each person&#8217;s involvement with the smear of skeptic climate scientists.<\/p>\n<p>Gelbspan&#8217;s various narratives often cover his first two talking points in some form within a single sentence, when <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Hio-2500-1024x556.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he mentions skeptics in comparison to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)<\/a> having <em>more than 2,500 scientists from more than a hundred countries<\/em>. This statement takes on a comical turn when, despite Ms Kreider having <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/kalee-kreider\/41\/b8a\/635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no more than a BA History degree<\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span>, she is found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/the-regional-impacts-of-climate-change-an-assessment-of-vulnerability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a 1997 IPCC special report<\/a> within its Annex H USA section of authors, contributors, and expert reviewers, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Kalee-IPCC.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">listed in association with<\/a>, of all scientific organizations, <strong>Greenpeace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>[<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span>10\/27\/16 Author&#8217;s edit: that link for her online resum\u00e9 no longer works, but <del><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/amy-kalee-kreider-635b8a41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this one does<\/a><\/del><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><strong>*<\/strong><\/span> and I have a screencapture of <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Kreider-BA-degree.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Education section<\/a> there for good measure. <\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>**<\/strong><\/span><em>3\/12\/18 Author&#8217;s edit: Except not any longer. Seems Ms Kreider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/amy-kalee-d-kreider-635b8a41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">altered the url now so that it additionally has her middle initial<\/a>, but is otherwise the same as her prior resum\u00e9 link. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Author&#8217;s 6\/27\/19 addition<\/span>: LinkedIn now requires free membership login, so for those who haven&#8217;t joined, here&#8217;s a screencapture composite showing <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kalees-no-D-vs-D.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the former and altered page urls<\/a>.]<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/nofrakkingconsensus.com\/2011\/03\/14\/peer-into-the-heart-of-the-ipcc-find-greenpeace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">larger problems with environmental groups associating with the IPCC<\/a> have already been very nicely shown in detail by <a href=\"http:\/\/nofrakkingconsensus.com\/my-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donna Laframboise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kalee Kreider&#8217;s LinkedIn resum\u00e9 is oddly missing a reference to the job she had between <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Kalee-Gore-LinkedIn-1024x762.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her departure from Al Gore&#8217;s office<\/a> and her current &#8220;Kreider Strategies, LLC&#8221; position:\u00a0 her prominent<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Kreider-Fenton-12-return.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 2012 return to Fenton Communications<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span><em>[<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Author&#8217;s 6\/27\/19 addition<\/span>: It was <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kalee-returns-to-Fenton-2012.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">big agency industry news<\/a> at the time. And it is <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kalee-June2019-resume%CC%81.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still missing<\/a> in her latest updated resum\u00e9 \u2026 in which her time at Greenpeace and Ozone Action <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kalee-June2019-resume%CC%81-sans-OA.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are also missing<\/a> now. Both were in her oldest LinkedIn resum\u00e9 version <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130603165933\/https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/kalee-kreider\/41\/b8a\/635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now preserved at the Internet Archive<\/a>.]<\/em> Who knows? It must not have worked out well. I&#8217;ll leave that particular resum\u00e9 glitch for others to muse about.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Al Gore expressed quite an appreciation of her work, to an extent that sounds like it extended further back than her actual March 2006-July 2012 spokesperson position:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Kalee Kreider ( who has been of invaluable service in all of my climate work)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Entertaining how that same <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/OurChoice-pg-411-690x1024.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">page 411 of his 2010 &#8220;Our Choice&#8221; book<\/a> has &#8220;<em>author and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pulitzer Prize-winning<\/a> journalist<\/em>&#8221; Ross Gelbspan in a lengthy list of people who &#8220;<em>undertook a complete review of the manuscript<\/em>&#8220;.)<\/p>\n<p>But Gore&#8217;s &#8220;climate work&#8221; extends back to, well, at least 1992-&#8217;93. Actually it goes back further, but I mention 1992-&#8217;93 here to drive home another problematic situation, the spot in Kreider&#8217;s LinkedIn resum\u00e9 where she says <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Kalee-OA-start-up-1024x931.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in regard to her work at Ozone Action<\/a> (bold emphasis mine),<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>February 1995<\/strong> \u2013 August 1996 (1 year 7 months) Washington D.C. Metro Area<br \/>\n<strong>Created and deployed<\/strong> the first media strategy for a start-up NGO working on atmospheric issues\u2014climate change and ozone depletion placing stories on network broadcast and mainstream print outlets. <strong>Assisted in all aspects of the start up.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/library\/politics\/080700lives-greenpeace.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 2000 <em>NY Times<\/em> article<\/a> says (<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Passac-Lohr-OA-founders.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5th-from-last paragraph<\/a>) Ozone Action was founded in July 1993 by John Passacantando and Greenpeace&#8217;s Karen Lohr. No mention of Kreider. Another <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Passac-1992-1024x433.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passacantando bio<\/a> places the start date at 1992. But this <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100528170658\/http:\/\/www.rollins.edu\/magazine\/archive\/spring2009\/profiles\/kreider.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spring 2009 <em>Rollins Magazine<\/em> interview<\/a> (her college alma mater&#8217;s publication) says in its <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Kalee-Rollins-OA-build-GP.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">8th &amp; 9th paragraph<\/a> (bold emphasis mine),<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After graduating, &#8230; she worked on the Clinton Crime Bill, then parlayed that experience into a post at the Justice Department. \u201c<strong>I had a friend who was starting up a small nonprofit and he wanted me to help him run it<\/strong>,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople said, \u2018What are you thinking? You\u2019re leaving the Justice Department for a little NGO?\u2019 But I knew I had to do something I was passionate about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">After building Ozone Action<\/span>, Kreider was ready to take another risk\u2014this time with Greenpeace&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What a semantics mess. Are we to believe she helped create Ozone Action overall in &#8217;92\/&#8217;93? Or her LinkedIn resum\u00e9, about arriving in 1995 to &#8216;create and deploy their first media strategy&#8217;? Which happens to be within the same the year Ross Gelbspan first gained fame for accusing skeptic climate scientists of industry funding corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Ross Gelbspan&#8217;s association with Ozone Action likely began sometime between their switch <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/OA-working-on-CC-since-12-95-1024x727.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in December 1995<\/a> from pure focus on ozone depletion to one which also concerned climate change (happening in the same <strong><em>month<\/em><\/strong> that Gelbspan first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loe.org\/shows\/shows.html?programID=95-P13-00050#feature9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">publicly mentioned his &#8216;industry corruption&#8217; findings<\/a>), and their <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/OA-docs-obtained-by-OA-Gelb-1024x733.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 1996 &#8220;Ties That Blind&#8221; report<\/a> mentioning that he and they &#8220;<em>obtained<\/em>&#8221; industry documents. The latter situation certainly takes on the appearance of a media strategy effort to marginalize skeptic climate scientists in the eyes of the public.<\/p>\n<p>Not long after, Kreider enjoyed her <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Kalee-leaving-OA-1024x745.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">send-off from Ozone Action<\/a>, and then blessed us with <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/5-May-1997-GP-press-release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this Greenpeace press release gem<\/a> about Gelbspan&#8217;s book weeks after its publication,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>PULITZER WINNER&#8217;S NEW BOOK DOCUMENTS\u00a0 OIL AND COAL INDUSTRY&#8217;S CAMPAIGN TO DERAIL GOVERNMENT ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON, May 5, 1997 (GP) &#8212; The coal and oil industries have mounted\u00a0 a multi-million dollar misinformation campaign to dismiss the threat of global climate change and derail international action, according\u00a0 to a new book by a Pulitzer prize winning journalist. In his book, &#8220;The Heat is On,&#8221; published by Addison-Wesley, author Ross\u00a0 Gelbspan says&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8221;In the aftermath of the catastrophic Red River flooding, `The Heat is On&#8217; has immediate relevance for the American people and our leaders,&#8221;\u00a0 said Kalee Kreider, Climate Campaign Director for Greenpeace USA.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, you take a media strategy effort to marginalize skeptic climate scientists from a little outfit called Ozone Action, and you then broadcast it through the worldwide speakers of Greenpeace. Then, get it <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1hr12min59sec-AnInconvTruth-1024x768.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">into a major movie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever her association with Gelbspan started, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/gelbKreider-FB-1024x839.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it remains to this day<\/a>. Oops, who else is seen in that last photo link?
