{"id":8764,"date":"2019-07-11T13:20:28","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T20:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=8764"},"modified":"2024-03-22T11:36:32","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T18:36:32","slug":"no-matter-where-you-go-there-he-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=8764","title":{"rendered":"No matter where you go, there he is"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He, being Ross Gelbspan, with regard to any prominent person regurgitating the accusation about skeptic climate scientists being paid by the fossil fuel industry to spread lies undercutting the so-called &#8216;settled science&#8217; of human-induced global warming. In this case, I already covered a particular journalistic due diligence problem within Nathanial Rich&#8217;s promotion of his epic <em>New York Times<\/em> story &#8220;Losing Earth&#8221; in <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=7395\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my August 9, 2018 blog post<\/a>. Rich&#8217;s blunder there was to repeat a hugely troubling talking point from Naomi Oreskes, a person who&#8217;s plagued with a variety of credibility problems as it pertains to her <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=6007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alleged entry<\/a> into the topic of &#8216;industry-corrupted skeptics&#8217; and the stories she tells <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=4244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surrounding that situation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I figured that would be the end of it regarding Nathanial Rich. I should know better about such things by now; Oreskes is never the end of the line in these kinds of situations.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Nathanial Rich wasn&#8217;t content to simply leave his opinions at just a newspaper publication, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Losing-Earth-History-Nathaniel-Rich\/dp\/0374191336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">turned it into a book<\/a>. Similar to many other book authors, he named who his information sources were. And, like so many other prominent enviro-activists regurgitating talking points about &#8216;industry-paid\/orchestrated disinformation campaigns&#8217;, he couldn&#8217;t resist mentioning the &#8220;<em>Information Council <strong>on<\/strong><\/em> [sic; <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IC-for-E.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">incorrect word<\/a>] <em>the Environment<\/em>&#8221; (ICE), the supposedly <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TotN-97-radio-interview.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sinister public relations campaign<\/a> that swayed national public opinion <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gelb-Snowed-WFA2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in an extraordinarily successful way<\/a>, so much so that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I1Do9vut6tc&amp;t=1748s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Gore claimed<\/a> ExxonMobil later adopted its strategy goal. Deep examination of the real situation reveals the ICE campaign was <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">actually so small that few ever saw it<\/a>, its alleged strategy goal to &#8220;<em>reposition global warming as theory rather than fact<\/em>&#8221; was no more than an outside proposal which was never even seen by the top ICE administrator, and his assistant <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Arnold-corroborates2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rejected the proposal<\/a> because he had no idea how it could be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Adding further insult to his own injury in connection <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Nate-Rich-ICE-bal-1024x841.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with his mention of the ICE campaign<\/a>, Nathanial Rich also couldn&#8217;t resist spitting up the unsupportable talking point implication about needless fair media balance given to the skeptic side of the issue \u2026 a talking point made famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?&amp;q=%22Gelbspan%22+%22journalistic+laziness%22+-globalwarming.org+-thegwpf.com+-wattsupwiththat.com+-americanthinker.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by guess who<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Just from that, loyal readers here can likely guess where I&#8217;m headed next: Nathanial Rich&#8217;s sources.<\/p>\n<p>From the &#8220;Losing Earth&#8221; book&#8217;s page 206,<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Nate-Rich-206-sources-1024x801.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I drew from the anthropologist <strong>Myanna Lahsen<\/strong>\u2019s outstanding research on the history of climate denialism \u2026; \u2026 <strong>Climate Files<\/strong> \u2026 interviews conducted by the <strong>American Institute of Physics<\/strong>. The following books deeply informed my discussion of industry&#8217;s involvement in climate politics: Censoring Science by <strong>Mark Bowen<\/strong>; The Discovery of Global Warming by <strong>Spencer R. Weart<\/strong>; Merchants of Doubt by <strong>Naomi Oreskes<\/strong> and Erik M. Conway; The Heat Is On by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ross Gelbspan<\/span>; Climate Cover-Up by <strong>James Hoggan<\/strong> with Richard Littlemore; and <strong>Stephen Schneider<\/strong>\u2019s Science as a Contact Sport.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Right. The wipeouts here are best illustrated by screencapture photo links.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Myanna Lahsen <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lahsen-Gelb-11-95.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">= Ross Gelbspan<\/a>. I showed that bit concerning her being taught by Gelbspan about journalism fairness at the end of my Lahsen blog post <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=3765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Climate Files = Gelbspan. It&#8217;s the Climate Files <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=5852\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">created by ex-Ozone Action worker Kert Davies<\/a>; Ozone Action being the place where that group and Gelbspan <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/OA-Gelb-obtained-v2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">magically &#8220;obtained&#8221;<\/a> the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em> \/ <em>older, less educated males<\/em> \u2026 <em>younger, lower-income women<\/em>&#8221; strategy\/targeting &#8216;memos&#8217; from a source they <strong><em>never<\/em><\/strong> named.<\/li>\n<li>American Institute of Physics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aip.org\/aip\/search?cx=004445072414534619134%3Azoo0-stuoya&amp;q_ry=gelbspan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">= more than two dozen search results references to Ross Gelbspan<\/a>, basically via Spencer Weart&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/history.aip.org\/climate\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Discovery of Global Warming<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Spencer Weart additionally = Gelbspan, in the way he regurgitated Gelbspan&#8217;s talking point about <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Weart-Gelb-media.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the media giving unneeded balance toward skeptic climate scientists<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Naomi Oreskes = Gelbspan, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/OreskesPPT-08.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in her 2008 &#8220;You Can Argue with the Facts&#8221; PowerPoint presentation<\/a> about those &#8216;leaked strategy\/targeting memos&#8217; where <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Oreskes07ppt.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">she cited<\/a> Gelbspan&#8217;s 2004 &#8220;Boiling Point&#8221; book (in which <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Gelb-Gelb-reposit3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>his<\/em> citation for the memos<\/a> was his own <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/THio-pg-34.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;The Heat is On&#8221; book<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Gelbspan = \u2026 well, he never said, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Gelb-ICE-docs-1024x623.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regarding those ICE memos<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>James Hoggan <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Hoggan-Oreskes-reposit2-1024x748.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">= Oreskes<\/a> = Gelbspan. Hoggan&#8217;s entire Desmogblog secondary career was <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Hoggan-know-nothing-liars.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">motivated by<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Pooley-Hoggan-Grandia.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">built on<\/a> the works of Ross Gelbspan.<\/li>\n<li>Stephen Schneider = Gelbspan, unmistakably <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Schneider-Gelb-reposition2-1024x750.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in that particular book reference<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wait \u2014 what about Mark Bowen? Well, I haven&#8217;t previously covered that individual here at GelbspanFiles. Does an independent corroboration about &#8216;industry-paid skeptic disinformation&#8217; finally arise from Nathanial Rich&#8217;s reference to Bowen&#8217;s 2008 &#8220;Censoring Science&#8221; book?<\/p>\n<p>Afraid not. On Bowen&#8217;s page 307, we see:<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Bowen-ICE-books-ref-307-1024x772.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It was beyond the scope of this book to tell all the gory details of the possibly criminal and certainly immoral campaign that special interest have waged to obscure the true science and prevent any effective action against devastating climate change. Much of that story <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">has been told by Ross Gelbspan<\/span> in two books, The Heat is On (Addison-Wesley, 1997) and boiling Point (Basic Books, 2004, as well as an article in the June 1998 issue of The Atlantic. <strong>The last is the source for the quote about the ICE public relations campaign that appears on page 237<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What did Bowen say on his page 237? I&#8217;d show you directly, but the Google Books system is <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Bowen-no-pg-237-1024x690.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">preventing that at this time of writing<\/a>. However, what&#8217;s been seen on the internet cannot be unseen. I copied it into my computer notes pile years ago when Google Books did permit public viewing of it, and another website happened to <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Evans-quotes-Bowen.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">copy it almost verbatim<\/a> in its <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080621083318\/http:\/\/www.grass-roots-press.com:80\/category\/reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review of Bowen&#8217;s book<\/a> (start date and size errors notwithstanding):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Beginning in <strong>1988<\/strong>, mainly in the United States, coal companies for the most part, oil companies as well, launched <strong>an enormous<\/strong> public relations campaign to &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">reposition global warming as theory rather than fact<\/span>.&#8217;. This was the stated goal of a campaign launched by the Information Council on the Environment (ICE) which was the creation of a second consortium of coal and utility companies.<em> [Gelbspan observes that]<\/em> an ICE campaign launched in 1991 was, according to strategy documents that were later exposed in the press,\u2026 aimed specifically at \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">older less-educated men<\/span>&#8216; and &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">young lower-income women<\/span>.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The bracketed part of the paragraph above is from my notes, filling in the ellipsis within the book review. And the June &#8217;98 <em>Atlantic<\/em> article Bowen refers to? It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/1998\/06\/a-good-climate-for-investment\/377126\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>, where <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gelb-Atlantic-June-98.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gelbspan says<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Since 1991 the fossil-fuel lobby has mounted an extremely effective campaign to persuade the public and policymakers that the issue of atmospheric warming is still unresolved scientifically. To take one example, in 1991 several coal and utility companies launched a program to set up interviews with journalists for three dissenting scientists. The campaign, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">according to strategy documents that were later exposed in the press<\/span>,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span> was designed to &#8220;<strong>reposition global warming as theory rather than fact<\/strong>&#8221; and was aimed specifically at &#8220;<strong>older, less educated men<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>young lower-income women<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span>As contrasted with what he said in 2005 at <em>Mother Jones<\/em> about &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gelb-Snowed-WFA2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>strategy papers I obtained at the time<\/em><\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>See the problem with <em>all<\/em> of this? Nathanial Rich, in his barely <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/LosingEarth-Apr19.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three month-old book<\/a>, just like <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/PCFFA-strat-target.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the latest<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/SherEdling-9.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nine<\/a> current global warming lawsuits, and just like Mark Bowen&#8217;s decade-old book, doesn&#8217;t need to tie himself into pretzel shapes with a citation cascade regarding smoking gun &#8216;leaked memo&#8217; evidence. The <strong>only thing<\/strong> he and the others need to cite is Ross Gelbspan&#8217;s 1997 book.<\/p>\n<p>But they can&#8217;t, can they? Put the spotlight solely on Gelbspan, and his luster quickly evaporates to reveal instead how he not only changed his tune between 1998 and 2005 about how those <strong><em>non-<\/em><\/strong>Western Fuels &#8216;memos&#8217; supposedly landed in his or <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other reporters&#8217; hands<\/a>, he&#8217;s also done that regarding who <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he accuses<\/a> of operating under them, and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gelb-never-won-been.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he backpedals<\/a> regarding <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/SEPP-no-Pulit-1024x674.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">direct assertions<\/a> that he never won a Pulitzer. Among myriad other <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;changing tune&#8217; inconsistencies<\/a> of his. Even the timeline for his self-described discovery of &#8216;industry-corrupted skeptics is <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plagued with problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not exactly the most reliable witness to have when accusing others of engaging in orchestrated disinformation campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Arguably, that&#8217;s the politically suicidal aspect of the global warming issue. No matter which mouse-maze for the &#8216;corrupt skeptic climate scientists&#8217; accusation that objective reporters, Federal investigators, and Big Energy Company defendant lawyers choose to wade into, there&#8217;s Ross Gelbspan at the end of each one &#8230;&#8230; with the shadowy figure of Al Gore looming right over his shoulder, who said <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ErintheB-360.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the following<\/a> in his 1992 &#8220;Earth in the Balance&#8221; book <strong><em>years<\/em><\/strong> before Gelbspan ever mentioned it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Documents <strong>leaked<\/strong> from the National Coal Association <strong>to my office<\/strong> reveal the depth of the cynicism involved in the campaign. For example, the strategy memorandum notes their &#8220;target groups&#8221; as follows: &#8220;People who respond most favorably to such statements are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">older, less-educated males<\/span> from larger households, who are not typically active information-seekers &#8230; another possible target is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">younger, lower-income women<\/span> \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He, being Ross Gelbspan, with regard to any prominent person regurgitating the accusation about skeptic climate scientists being paid by the fossil fuel industry to spread lies undercutting the so-called &#8216;settled science&#8217; of human-induced global warming.
