In digging further into this situation, I see an entertaining irony concerning one of the latest global warming lawsuits and the old worthless 1998 American Petroleum Institute (API) &#8220;<em>Victory will be achieved<\/em> \u2026&#8221; leaked memo, and I now see something in my work that needed to be corrected (sort of &#8211; it isn&#8217;t helpful to the people&#8217;s actions I dissect).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s recap a couple of key detail points from <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=8116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my previous blog post<\/a> on this API memo:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1998\/04\/26\/us\/industrial-group-plans-to-battle-climate-treaty.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1998 <em>New York Times<\/em> article<\/a> about the memo said they received it from the National Environmental Trust who in turn <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-given-EDF-obtained.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">say they got it<\/a> from an &#8220;industrial official,&#8221; but the article doesn&#8217;t show the memo at all.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Climate Cover-up&#8221; book author \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2728\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Desmogblog site co-founder<\/a> James Hoggan provided a link in his 2009 book to the memo at Greenpeace and said Greenpeace was the group that discovered it and was <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Hoggan-GP-API-scans.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first to put it online<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Greenpeace\u2019s 2002 \u201cDenial and Deception\u201d report <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/GP-DD-02-Victory.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">summarized the memo<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, what I had to fix in my prior blog post was my <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/GF-correction-GP-API-98.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">incorrect assumption<\/a> about Greenpeace&#8217;s scans of the memo being in an Appendix attached to their 2002 \u201cDenial and Deception\u201d report. Greenpeace actually undercuts James Hoggan about where their first &#8216;publication&#8217; of the memo appeared &#8211; not in their 2002 \u201cDenial and Deception,&#8221; but in their August 1998 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/Global\/international\/planet-2\/report\/2006\/3\/the-oil-industry-and-climate-c.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Oil Industry and Climate Change<\/a>,&#8221; where their scans of the memo are <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/GP98Victory-scans-1024x866.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">very hard to read<\/a>, and where they make no claims about their role in &#8220;discovering&#8221; it.<\/p>\n<p>Is there something to Hoggan&#8217;s other claim about Greenpeace? A 2013 Desmog article echoed that claim, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Desmog-GP-uncov-doc.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>uncovered and documented by Greenpeace<\/em><\/a>,&#8221; while pointing to a <em>different<\/em> Greenpeace report, &#8220;Dealing in Doubt,&#8221; which was first published in 2010. Greenpeace&#8217;s 2013 rehash of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Greenpeace_Dealing-in-Doubt-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that report<\/a> only offers a link to their scans of the memo (<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/GP-DiD-API-research-scans.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pg 16<\/a>). Their original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/Global\/international\/planet-2\/report\/2010\/3\/dealing-in-doubt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2010 publication version<\/a>, however, seemingly vindicates Hoggan&#8217;s claim about them &#8220;discovering&#8221; it with three additional words (<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/GP-DiD-API-2010-leaked-to.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pg 9<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The plan they drew up, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">leaked to Greenpeace<\/span>, proposed: \u2026\u2026 \u2018Victory will be achieved when \u2026..&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I illustrated in my prior blog post, the <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?tag=sher-edling-boilerplate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boilerplate copy Sher Edling global warming lawsuits<\/a> oddly link to scans of the API memo (most recently in their latest <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/SherEdling-Victory.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen\u2019s Associations Inc. v. Chevron<\/em> case<\/a>) which are devoid of <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.documentcloud.org\/documents\/784572\/api-global-climate-science-communications-plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">any source<\/a>, when there is a nearly identical link identifying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/784572-api-global-climate-science-communications-plan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ex-Greenpeace figure<\/a> Kert Davies as the contributor. If Greenpeace really was the first to put out the actual API memo in full text form, that might explain why the lawsuits are using Davies&#8217; scans, but the mystery remains regarding why they don&#8217;t directly credit Greenpeace.<\/p>\n<p>Problem is, the James Hoggan \/ Greenpeace claims are still totally contradicted by what was stated in the <em>NYT<\/em> April 26,1998 \u201cIndustrial Group Plans to Battle Climate Treaty\u201d article about the National Environmental Trust (NET) <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-given-EDF-obtained.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leaking the memo<\/a>. What happens if an intensive search is undertaken to see how the NET was involved?<\/p>\n<p>You find this old archive internet press release <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/19990223192759\/http:\/\/www.envirotrust.com:80\/rel98apr27.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from the NET itself<\/a>, placed online <strong><em>the same day<\/em><\/strong> the <em>NYT<\/em> article was published:<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NET-API-Victory-PR-1024x754.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s inconvenient for both James Hoggan and Greenpeace, because the only way for Greenpeace to have made the memo available for public viewing <em>first<\/em> would have been if they had put it out <strong><em>before<\/em><\/strong> the NET did.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there is another monstrous current irony to this entire situation. Yes, it would be a bit of a distraction for the Sher Edling global warming lawsuits to refer to the Internet Archive site to display the text of the memo; many people aren&#8217;t aware the site exists or might be confused about how long-lost website pages are viewed within it. Why not instead refer to a straightforward current online transcript of the API memo \u2026\u2026. such as the one <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Goog-PCFFA-PR-2001.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dating as far back<\/a> as 2001 <a href=\"https:\/\/pcffa.org\/press-release-page\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen\u2019s Associations Inc page<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/PCFFA-NET-PR.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once again, instead presenting the world with bulletproof evidence of the fossil fuel industry colluding with shill skeptic scientists to spread false global warming information, we have ever-deepening problems surrounding this particular API &#8220;<em>Victory will be achieved<\/em>&#8221; angle of the accusation and the core people involved in efforts to promulgate it.<br \/>\n&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=9716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Part 3<\/a>: what&#8217;s up with James Hoggan suggesting an easier-to-read text-only version is seen at some Dutch site run <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Hoggan-E-Wesker.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by a user named &#8220;E Wesker<\/a>\u201d?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2026 we can keep the inconvenient truths buried.
