{"id":2842,"date":"2015-06-04T15:18:58","date_gmt":"2015-06-04T22:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2842"},"modified":"2015-06-04T15:18:58","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T22:18:58","slug":"skeptic-climate-scientists-are-industry-paid-shills-sir-what-is-your-source-for-that","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2842","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;<i>Skeptic Climate Scientists are Industry-Paid Shills<\/i>&#8221; (sir, what is your source for that?)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s old is not new again, it is still old and literally unsupportable.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cato.org\/publications\/commentary\/climate-technology-trepidation-misleading-rhetoric\" target=\"_blank\">August 1997 <em>Washington Times<\/em> article<\/a>, the Cato Institute&#8217;s Jerry Taylor reproduced then-Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt&#8217;s quote on the global warming issue as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Oil and coal companies in the United States have joined in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">a conspiracy to hire pseudoscientists to deny the facts<\/span>, and then begin raising political arguments that are essentially fraudulent. Energy companies need to be called to account because what they\u2019re doing is un-American in the most basic sense. They are compromising our future by misrepresenting the facts by suborning scientists onto their payrolls and attempting to mislead the American people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Immediately following Babbitt&#8217;s quote, Taylor <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/JTaylor-on-Gelb.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">very nicely noted<\/a> how Ross Gelbspan&#8217;s April 1997-published &#8220;The Heat is On&#8221; was still a popular item in prominent newspapers &#8211; as readers here know, it was the book which made the &#8216;leaked memo&#8217; phrase &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1480\" target=\"_blank\"><em>reposition global warming as theory rather than fact<\/em><\/a>&#8221; famous.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor gleaned Secretary Babbitt&#8217;s quote from <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/19980220212644\/http:\/\/www.junkscience.com\/news\/babbitt.html\" target=\"_blank\">the public radio Diane Rehm show<\/a>, in which the <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Rehm-Babbitt.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">unabridged quote<\/a> has Babbitt claiming the &#8216;fraudulent arguments&#8217; by &#8216;pseudoscientists&#8217; were&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;the same kind of arguments they used against acid rain, they used against the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On November 6, 2013, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) seemingly channeled Babbitt, expanding the &#8220;<em>same kind of arguments they used against acid rain<\/em>\u2026&#8221; line into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wCIzWwVroNU\" target=\"_blank\">19 minute U.S. Senate speech<\/a> covering ozone layer depletion, acid rain, and global warming, with the title of &#8220;The Deniers&#8217; Playbook.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Just days ago, Senator Whitehouse offer <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Whitehouse-WashPo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">the following<\/a> as the top sentence for his opinion piece <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/the-fossil-fuel-industrys-campaign-to-mislead-the-american-people\/2015\/05\/29\/04a2c448-0574-11e5-8bda-c7b4e9a8f7ac_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">at the <em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Fossil fuel companies and their allies are funding a massive and sophisticated campaign to mislead the American people about the environmental harm caused by carbon pollution.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See how critical the accusation is within that sentence as a means to maintain the notion of &#8216;harmful carbon (meaning CO2) pollution&#8217;? Senator Whitehouse has no scientific expertise to say human-induced CO2 causes global warming, and reporters could easily show how scientific assessments he points to are contradicted by others. Stir in the corruption accusation, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Whitehouse-tob.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">equate it to scandalous &#8216;big tobacco&#8217; efforts<\/a>, and nobody has to answer any tough questions. &#8220;The science is settled&#8221; \/ &#8220;skeptics are industry-corrupted&#8221; \/ &#8220;reporters may ignore skeptic material because of points 1 &amp; 2.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Absent from mainstream media reporters over the last two decades is an elemental question which could be posed to any politician or public figure who says people skeptical of man-caused global warming are paid to lie:\u00a0 who was the source for the accusation and did that source ever provide any physical evidence to back up the accusation?<\/p>\n<p>Therein lies the cancer problem that could potentially kill the entire global warming issue.
