Global warming believers need only to counter dry recitations of <a href=\"http:\/\/climatechangereconsidered.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skeptic science material<\/a> with:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>assertions that the <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2704\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sheer numbers<\/a> of &#8216;climate scientists&#8217; on the IPCC side indicates this to be the overwhelming consensus opinion<\/li>\n<li>claims about leaked memo evidence proving skeptics are paid industry money to\u00a0&#8220;<em>reposition global warming as theory rather than fact<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; dupe the public, in other words<\/li>\n<li>the obvious conclusion that reporters aren&#8217;t obligated to give fair balance to skeptics because of the previous two points.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In a nutshell, <strong>settled<\/strong> science, <strong>crooked<\/strong> skeptics, reporters may <strong>ignore<\/strong> skeptics \u2014 bam, bam, bam.<\/p>\n<p>A timeline of where, how and when that &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase first appeared and where it prominently pops up afterward is something global warming believers would hate, since it might prompt a total loss of faith in the validity of that central accusation point. The loss could cascade into questions of whether the science actually is settled in the face of skeptics&#8217; science-based criticisms, and people may also start to wonder about the &#8216;fair media balance&#8217; idea, since they might not readily recall instances where skeptics actually received that from mainstream media reporters.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One thing to always keep in mind about the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase accusation against skeptic climate scientists is how it is literally <strong>all<\/strong> that Al Gore and his followers have to prove skeptics are corrupt. None of them have ever proven a pay-for-performance arrangement exists between skeptics and industry funders, nobody mentions any in-depth details about the leak of the memo containing that strategy phrase, and no accuser ever attempted to show the collective ICE campaign memos to the public before my work appeared online. As can be seen below, one of the biggest problems is Al Gore&#8217;s 2006 claim that Gelbspan discovered the memo containing that phrase, but Gore himself quoted from that same memo set <strong><em>years<\/em><\/strong> before Gelbspan first said anything about it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<br \/>\n(Words highlighted in red indicate later key repetitions. Boldface words indicate serious contradictions. <em>[<span style=\"color: #993366;\">10\/12\/18 Author&#8217;s addition:<\/span> To streamline reading of this list, my previous update time notations have been deleted, with one exception in purple below. This is a list that&#8217;ll need more additions as more prominent examples are found.] <\/em>)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In early 1991, U.S. coal company associations created the Information Council for the Environment (ICE) pilot project public relations campaign to provide some balanced science assessments they thought were unfairly missing from Al Gore&#8217;s then-current narratives about the threat of global warming. The objective was to show how the debate was anything but settled, and one of the <strong>alleged<\/strong> internal memos for the PR planners had <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/GP-scans-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this<\/a> as the #1 strategy: &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>reposition global warming as theory (not fact)<\/em><\/span>.&#8221; Further along in those <strong>alleged<\/strong> memos, the <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/GP-scans-target.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">targeted audience<\/a> for this campaign were &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>older, less-educated males<\/em><\/span>&#8221; and &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">younger, lower-income women<\/span><\/em>.&#8221; Considering how <a href=\"https:\/\/research.greenpeaceusa.org\/?a=view&amp;d=2950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the rest of the memo and other papers<\/a><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>* <\/strong><\/span>are worded, the strategy sentence could have read, &#8220;Show how the man-caused global warming theory is contradicted by theories of natural variability&#8221;. The sentence in context with the rest of the PR papers gives no indication it is a top-down industry directive for skeptic scientists to lie about the issue. <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong><em>[<\/em><\/strong> <strong>*<\/strong><em>10\/5\/18 Author&#8217;s addition: if that Greenpeace Archives link stops functioning, as it briefly did around December 2017, my downloaded copy of their file is <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/1991-ICE-docs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/em>. <em>It also needs to be emphasized right here that it turns out the specific strategy\/targeting memo set <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=7477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>was never part<\/strong> of the ICE campaign<\/a><\/em>. <em>Author&#8217;s <strong>10\/24\/24 update<\/strong>:<\/em>\u00a0<em>The Internet Archive&#8217;s version of the original Greenpeace downloadable PDF file is functioning again, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160310214523\/http:\/\/research.greenpeaceusa.org\/?a=download&amp;d=2950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em> <strong><em>]<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The first news outlet to mention the ICE campaign in any manner was the May 24, 1991 article in the Flagstaff <em>Arizona Daily Sun<\/em>, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AZ-Daily-Sun-1024x501.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global warming ad campaign termed irresponsible<\/a>.&#8221; It did not, however quote anything from strategy\/targeting memo set because the reporter was quite likely unaware that it was falsely attributed to the ICE campaign.<\/li>\n<li>Phil Shabecoff&#8217;s Greenwire electronic news brief sharing service was the first media outlet to quote that memo set, specifically <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Greenwire-date-ICE-targ.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the targeting phrases<\/a> in its June 19, 1991 &#8220;Inside Track: Sowing the Seeds of Doubt in the Greenhouse&#8221; brief. More on that situation <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=7715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A June 24, 1991 <em>Energy Daily<\/em> article had specific ICE memo phrases <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Oreskes-ODriscoll-EDaily-1024x493.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in its title<\/a> &#8220;Greenhouse ads target <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;low income&#8217; women<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;less educated&#8217; men<\/span>&#8221; and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/EcoGeneva-ODriscoll2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">within its content<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The June 25, 1991 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science-bbs.com\/98-environment\/20c4f17328434d4a.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eco Geneva newsletter<\/a> quoted the <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/EcoGeneva-strat-target2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strategy\/targeting memo phrases<\/a> while additionally reproducing extracts from the above <em>Energy Daily<\/em> article.<\/li>\n<li>The June 28, 1991 issue of <em>Science<\/em> had <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200325180940\/https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/252\/5014\/1784.6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a short news item<\/a> about the ICE campaign but it <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Science-6-91-1784-5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">made no mention<\/a> of the strategy\/targeting memo set.<\/li>\n<li>The July 8, 1991 <em>NY Times<\/em> article about ICE, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/NY-Times-1991-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">specifically repeated the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase<\/a>, saying it had received copies of the ICE memos <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from the Sierra Club<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Al Gore&#8217;s January 1, 1992 &#8220;Earth in the Balance&#8221; book quotes <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/ErintheB-ad-campaign.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">directly from the ICE memos on page 360<\/a>, &#8220;\u2026 <em>some self-interested <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">cynics<\/span> are seeking to cloud the underlying issue of the environment&#8230;Documents leaked <strong>from the National Coal Association to my office<\/strong> reveal&#8230;as follows: &#8220;People who respond most favorably to such statements are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">older, less-educated males<\/span> from larger households, who are not typically active information-seekers&#8230; another possible target is\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>younger, lower-income women<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>What little that can be seen at a Google books search of the June 1992 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?cd=6&amp;id=uIbYZzc_IrMC&amp;dq=information+council+on+the+environment&amp;q=reposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Greenhouse effect<\/a>\u201d, Volume 64, edited by Matthew A. Kraljic, shows the identical wording of the July 8, 1991 <em>NY Times<\/em> article.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0In the 1993 updated version of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=hRVdAAAAMAAJ&amp;q=%22repositioning+global+warming%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gaia, An Atlas of Planet Management<\/a>\u201d, a sidebar paragraph <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Gaia-93-Reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slightly alters the strategy phrase<\/a> by adding &#8220;ing&#8221; to the first word and an extra &#8220;a&#8221; near the end, but otherwise keeps the parentheses around the last bit, like the original ICE memo did. However, this book incorrectly names the ICE PR campaign as being the &#8220;<em>Informed Citizens for the Environment<\/em>&#8220;, a problem I detail at longer length <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. Regrettably, this book offers not source for any material in it.<\/li>\n<li>Curtis Moore&#8217;s and Alan Miller&#8217;s August 1994 book &#8220;Green Gold&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/GrnG-94.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cites the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase<\/a> from the July 8, 1991 <em>NY Times<\/em> article. However, Moore and Miller also must have seen the other ICE papers firsthand, as they mention an interview <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Moore-Miller-GG-endnote-1024x768.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with a person cited in an ICE memo<\/a> who is not named in the <em>NYT<\/em> article.<\/li>\n<li>Ross Gelbspan&#8217;s first mention (that I&#8217;ve found so far) of the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase happened during a November 16, 1995 C-SPAN phone-in interview, where he also immediately falsely attributed the &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">older, less educated men<\/span>&#8220;<\/em> and &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>younger, low-income women<\/em><\/span>&#8221; words to the Western Fuels Association&#8217;s Information Council for the Environment PR campaign, nearly identical words seen in Gore&#8217;s 1992 &#8220;Earth in the Balance&#8221; book. Additional details <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=16037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Gelbspan&#8217;s second mention of the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase occured during a December 15, 1995 <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/NPR-LOE-Gelb-reposittarget-95.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Living on Earth National Public Radio interview<\/a>, where he also mentioned the audience targeting phrases.<\/li>\n<li>On January 25, 1996, <em>The Phoenix New Times<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Phx-NT-Jan96-reposit-target.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repeated the second half<\/a> of the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase along with the &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>older, less educated men<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>young, low-income women<\/em><\/span>&#8221; words, and additionally provided other ICE memo phrases not found in Gelbspan&#8217;s radio interview\u2026. <strong>months<\/strong> before the next entry below.<\/li>\n<li>An April 1996 &#8220;Ties That Blind: Case Studies of Corporate Influence on Climate Change Policy&#8221; report by the enviro-activist group Ozone Action stated <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/OA-docs-obtained-by-OA-Gelb-1024x733.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it and Ross Gelbspan &#8220;obtained&#8221; the ICE documents<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Rowell&#8217;s October 22, 1996 &#8220;Green backlash&#8221; book <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Rowell-reposit-no-source.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">repeats the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase<\/a>, but his endnote #106 says nothing more than &#8220;<em>ICE internal packet, Strategies, p. 3<\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>David Helvarg&#8217;s December 16, 1996 &#8220;Energy Companies Try the &#8216;Tobacco Approach&#8217; to Evidence of Global Warming&#8221; article in <em>The Nation<\/em> (pages 3-4 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20111125061838\/http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/sites\/default\/files\/guide2011-11-28.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>), like Rowell&#8217;s book above, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Helvarg-NationPDF-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quotes<\/a> the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase, but does not say where it came from. The unusual thing about Helvarg&#8217;s article is that he mentions the name of ICE&#8217;s PR director, something that only two other publications (that I&#8217;ve been able to find) do &#8211; one was an obscure November 1991 Oregon free enterprise newsletter, the other was the Flagstaff <em>Arizona Daily Sun<\/em> paper I noted in item #2 above.<\/li>\n<li>Gelbspan&#8217;s April 1997 The Heat is On book <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/THio-pg-34.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cites the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase<\/a> without saying where he got it, his end notes <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gelb-ICE.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">simply stating<\/a>, &#8220;ICE documents in author&#8217;s possession, Mission Statement, Strategy Statement, and Test Market proposal, February 1991\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Mark Hertsgaard&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hertzgaard-HIO-1997-1024x456.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 3, 1997 NY Times review<\/a> of Gelbspan&#8217;s book stated, \u201c&#8230;<em>the fossil fuel lobby has achieved the goal stated in a 1991 planning memo <strong>unearthed by Gelbspan<\/strong>: to &#8216;reposition global warming as theory rather than fact.&#8217;\u00a0 &#8230;No other reporter has told this story as comprehensively or explored its implications for human welfare as searchingly as Gelbspan, <strong>a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist<\/strong><\/em>.&#8221; As seen in items 2 though 5, Gelbspan&#8217;s mention of the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase\u00a0occurred <em>after<\/em> those, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/search\/Gelbspan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he is not a Pulitzer winner<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Repetition of the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase basically increases exponentially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/#q=&quot;reposition+global+warming&quot;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">after 1997<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Gelbspan&#8217;s &#8220;Boiling Point&#8221; book was published in 2004 (<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gelb-Gelb.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it cites his 1997 book<\/a> for the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase), and Al Gore&#8217;s <em>NY Times<\/em> review of it <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Gore-Gelb-virtually-only-1024x513.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Gelbspan&#8217;s first book is &#8220;<em>the best, and virtually only, study of how the coal and oil industry&#8217; corrupts skeptic scientists.<\/em>&#8221; One paragraph later, Gore said Gelbspan documented, &#8220;<em>the largely successful efforts of companies like ExxonMobil to paralyze the policy process, confuse the American people and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">cynically<\/span> &#8216;reposition global warming as theory rather than fact\u2026&#8217;<\/em>\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>In a PBS Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/now\/printable\/transcriptN0W116_full_print.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April 22, 2005 broadcast<\/a>, Gelbspan <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/PBS-Now-Gelb-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>, &#8220;<em>This is some of the documents I gathered along the way that document this very, very <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">cynical<\/span> campaign of deception and disinformation&#8230;.we got a copy of the strategy papers for that campaign. And it said that the purpose of the campaign was to &#8220;reposition global warming as theory rather than fact<\/em>\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Comer v. Murphy Oil (Third Amended Class Action Complaint February 23 2006<\/em> global warming nuisance court case <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ComerVMurph-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cited<\/a> the &#8220;reposition&#8221; phrase &#8211; more details about that situation <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Gore&#8217;s 2006 &#8220;An Inconvenient Truth&#8221; movie spells out the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase full screen in red letters just before <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1hr12min59sec-AnInconvTruth-1024x768.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its 1 hour 13 minute point<\/a>. The companion book for the movie says Gelbspan <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AnIncTr263-Reposit-Gelb2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was the <strong>discoverer<\/strong> of the phrase<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/interviews\/al-gore-plays-leading-man\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 28, 2006 review<\/a> of Gore&#8217;s movie, the late <em>Chicago Sun Times<\/em> movie reviewer Roger Ebert <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Ebert-Gore-reposit-1024x449.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quoted Gore directly<\/a>: &#8220;\u2026 <em>the energy industry has paralyzed America for 20 years with disinformation like that. They&#8217;re using exactly the same strategy the tobacco industry used. \u2026 <strong>We<\/strong> found an internal memo from an energy industry group from 1998, written by their disinformation specialists, saying their objective was: &#8216;Reposition global warming as theory rather than fact.&#8217;<\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Mark Hertsgaard&#8217;s May 2006 &#8220;While Washington Slept&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hertzgaard-VF-reposit-1024x417.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Vanity Fair<\/em> article<\/a> is published, with what appears to be an unequivocal statement that the &#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase originates from the Global Climate Coalition (GCC), a mistake that is repeated at Wikipedia from 2006 to 2008, thus prompting other mistaken repetitions of that association worldwide. Wikipedia removed it when a critic forcefully pointed out <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/LingNut-VF-triumph-1024x433.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how unsupportable the association was<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>One particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/#q=%22ICE%27s+game+plan+called+for+enlisting+greenhouse+doubters%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">widespread citation<\/a> of the phrase is <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Newsweek-Begley-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a quote in the August 5, 2007 Newsweek magazine article<\/a> &#8220;Global-Warming Deniers: A Well-Funded Machine&#8221;. Reporter Sharon Begley did not say who was the source for her assertion that a &#8220;<em>game plan called for enlisting greenhouse doubters to &#8216;reposition global warming as theory rather than fact,&#8217; and to sow doubt about climate research just as cigarette makers had about smoking research<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>At the Davos 2008 conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I1Do9vut6tc&amp;t=1748s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gore says (off camera)<\/a>, &#8220;<em><strong>Exxon Mobil<\/strong> has funded 40 different front groups that have all been a part of a strategic persuasion campaign to, in their own words &#8216;reposition global warming as theory rather than fact.&#8217;\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The <em>Kivalina v. ExxonMobil Corp., et al. (February 26, 2008)<\/em> global warming nuisance court case <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/KivVExx-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cited<\/a> the strategy\/targeting memo phrases &#8211; more details about that situation <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22merchants+of+doubt%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Naomi Oreskes<\/a> 2008 Powerpoint presentation <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/OreskesPPT-08.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quoted the strategy\/targeting phrases<\/a>, noting they were archived at place where, it turns out, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/AMS-archivist2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they <em>never<\/em> were<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Gore&#8217;s 7000+ word <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Gore-reposit-RStone-2011-1024x436.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 22, 2011<em> Rolling Stone article<\/em><\/a> bypassed Gelbspan and his own &#8220;Earth in the Balance&#8221; book note and said the following: &#8220;&#8230; <em>the script for this show <strong>was leaked to The New York Times<\/strong> as early as 1991. In an internal document, a consortium of the largest global-warming polluters spelled out their principal strategy: &#8220;Reposition global warming as theory, rather than fact<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In 2013, a presenter for Gore&#8217;s Climate Reality Project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EOnc0os8uQ4&amp;t=4519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said this<\/a>: &#8220;<em>A lavishly sponsored campaign, started twenty years ago, to distract us from the problem. In a memo that <strong>was leaked to the press several years ago<\/strong> revealed their strategy in their own words, which is to &#8216;reposition global warming as a theory rather than a fact.&#8217;<\/em>&#8221; Western Fuels&#8217; PR campaign started <em>and ended<\/em> over 22 years ago, it was not &#8216;lavishly funded&#8217;, and the leak of its memos in 1991 most certainly was more than &#8216;<em>several years ago<\/em>\u2019. The presenter&#8217;s PowerPoint slide <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CRProject-cynical-reposit-1024x649.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shows this statement<\/a>: <em>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen this before&#8230; Their\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">cynical<\/span> objective, outlined in a secret memo by a consortium of the largest carbon polluters, that was leaked to the press, is&#8211;in their own words&#8211;to: &#8220;Reposition Global Warming as Theory Rather than Fact.&#8221;<\/em>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The Union of Concerned Scientists &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/global-warming\/fight-misinformation\/climate-deception-dossiers-fossil-fuel-industry-memos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Climate Deception Dossiers<\/a>&#8221; web page features <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2015\/07\/gw-minigraphic-climate-deception-dossier-5-ICE-memo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a handy infographic<\/a> of the\u00a0&#8220;<em>reposition global warming<\/em>&#8221; phrase, and a link to their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/attach\/2015\/07\/Climate-Deception-Dossier-5_ICE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">downloadable PDF file<\/a> of old Western Fuels ICE campaign memo scans, which is <strong>100% identical<\/strong> to Greenpeace&#8217;s scan collection (which I linked to in item #1), after, of course, the deletion of the page 1 Ozone Action summary. <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">As I noted in my June 10, 2013 blog post<\/a>, nobody else (with one oddball exception) could bring themselves to point directly to Greenpeace&#8217;s &#8220;ICE memo collection&#8221; over the last two decades, and UCS only adds to this streak in a really strange way.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/global-warming\/climate-deniers\/koch-industries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greenpeace page<\/a> prominently features its Koch Brothers Youtube video which <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Greenpeace-YouTube-11-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">attempts to portray the<\/a> &#8220;reposition global warming&#8221; phrase as a sinister plot hatched by &#8220;industries&#8221; to hoodwink the public, which I detailed in <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=2383\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this blog post<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The trio of &#8220;<em>San Mateo \/ Marin \/ Imperial Beach v. Chevron Corp., et al.<\/em>&#8221; court cases filed in California in July 2017 cited the &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3-complaints-Reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strategy\/targeting memo phrases<\/a>,&#8217; which I detailed at further length <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=5763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The trio of &#8220;<em>Santa Cruz County\/City \/ Richmond v. Chevron Corp., et al.<\/em>&#8221; court cases filed in California in December 2017\/January 2018 cited the &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Richmond-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strategy and (partial) targeting memo phrases<\/a>,&#8217; which I detailed at further length <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=6271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Two additional court cases filed in July 2018, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=7168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>State of Rhode Island<\/em><\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=7323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City of Baltimore<\/a>&#8221; continue the trend of quoting the strategy\/targeting phrases.<\/li>\n<li>Twin January \/ September 2019 Friends of the Court briefs (prominently featuring Naomi Oreskes) for the California \/ Baltimore global warming lawsuits feature the &#8220;reposition global warming&#8221; phrase on <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Oreskes-et-al-ICE-Michaels.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">printout pages 26<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Baltimore-amici-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">28<\/a>, respectively. Chevron<\/em> lawsuit <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/PCFFA-strat-target.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quotes the strategy\/targeting phrases<\/a> as does the boilerplate identical March 9, 2020 <em>City \/ County of Honolulu v. Sunoco<\/em> lawsuit, with <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Honolulu-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its quoting of those<\/a>. More details of course on those two, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=7858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=9896\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Minnesota v American Petroleum Institute<\/em> lawsuit, filed on 6\/24\/20, <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/MN-v-API-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quotes the strategy \/ targeting phrases<\/a>. More <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=10334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Hoboken v. ExxonMobil (9\/2\/20) lawsuit <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Hoboken-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quotes the strategy \/ targeting phrases<\/a>, as does the 9\/9\/20 <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Charleston-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Charleston v Brabham<\/em> Oil one<\/a>, along with the 9\/10\/20 <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Delaware-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Delaware v. BP<\/em> one<\/a>, and the 10\/12\/20 <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Maui-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Maui v. Sunoco<\/em> one<\/a>. There are so many of these now, I found it necessary to create a list of all my dissections of these lawsuits where links to each <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?page_id=18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are in my Global Warming Lawsuits page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Naomi Oreskes&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/nov\/18\/the-forgotten-oil-ads-that-told-us-climate-change-was-nothing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">November 2021 article in the UK <em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>, where she <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Oreskes-expert-informed-reposit-1024x745.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attributed the never-used acronym name<\/a> to the PR campaign that never operated under the strategy directive, nor did that campaign ever publish the two newspaper ads she shows.<\/li>\n<li>Covering Climate Now&#8217;s March 2, 2023 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/coveringclimatenow.org\/climate-beat-story\/fox-doesnt-just-lie-about-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FOX Doesn\u2019t Just Lie About Elections<\/a>&#8221; diatribe, in which the piece got no further than <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/CCN-Fox-megaphonic-reposit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its 4th paragraph<\/a> before feeling compelled to dredge up the &#8220;reposition global warming&#8221; phrase \u2014 because the co-founder of CCN has been enslaved to that same phrase <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Hertsgaard-HiO-97-reposit2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all the way back to 1997<\/a> \u2014 see item #18 above.
