You say &#8216;<em>Skeptic scientists first claimed global warming is not happening, then they said it is happening but is not man-made, then they caved in and said it is man-made and is either good for plants, or too expensive and too late to fix<\/em>\u2019. This makes them look foolish, and you look like a really smart, reasoned person with full knowledge of the topic. Mention those skeptics are funded by &#8216;big coal &amp; oil&#8217;, and you&#8217;ll gain more adoration as someone who exposes sinister hidden truths. However, you better hope nobody notices how the skeptics have <strong>consistently<\/strong> said this entire time that the IPCC has not conclusively proved human-induced CO2, an otherwise harmless greenhouse gas, is the main driver of what <em>little<\/em> global warming we&#8217;ve seen over the last century.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=1237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skeptic-Trashing Environmental Sociologist<\/a>\u2019, Oklahoma State sociology professor Dr. Riley Dunlap, painted himself into this exact corner about &#8216;inconsistent skeptics&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/RDunlap-not-hap-1024x511.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at a 2010 AAAS symposium<\/a> (Australian radio show reproduction transcript\/audio <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/programs\/scienceshow\/climate-change-scepticism---its-sources-and\/3111682#transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, click either the &#8220;Download audio&#8221; or &#8220;show transcript&#8221; tabs):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026the counter claims to the IPCC issued by climate change deniers, especially the contrarian scientists, have changed in response to growing evidence of global warming. &#8216;It&#8217;s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">not occurring<\/span>, it&#8217;s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">naturally caused<\/span>, it <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">won&#8217;t be that harmful<\/span>.&#8217; &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Conservative think-tanks, obviously <strong>with corporate support<\/strong> &#8230;\u00a0 have greatly amplified the work of contrarian scientists.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dunlap, however, is only <a href=\"http:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2012\/09\/11\/the-other-problem-with-the-lewandowsky-paper-and-similar-skeptic-motivation-analysis-core-premise-off-the-rails-about-fossil-fuel-industry-corruption-accusation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of many sociologists enslaved to citing Ross Gelbspan<\/a> for that latter insinuation about industry funding tainting the work of skeptic climate scientists.<\/p>\n<p>This &#8216;inconsistent skeptics&#8217; situation gets more intriguing when we spot an ordinary blogger writing something very similar<a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/7-yrs-bf-Dunlap-1024x586.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <strong>seven years before Dunlap<\/strong><\/a> (full text <a href=\"http:\/\/theivybush.blogspot.com\/2003\/07\/im-having-second-thoughts-about-that.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Consider the evolution of the global warming debate. When scientists first proposed that human activity was warming up the earth, they said, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Global warming isn&#8217;t happening<\/span>.&#8221; When more data confirmed the original hypothesis, they said, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">OK, the earth is warming up, but for natural reasons<\/span>, not because of pollution.&#8221; Still more data was brought forward. Now they say, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Yes, global warming is happening<\/span>, and it&#8217;s being caused by us, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">but it&#8217;s not so bad<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wow. Dr Dunlap plagiarized words from some unknown blogger? Hardly. Rummage around among the repetitions of this narrative\u2026..<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>John Holdren, International Herald Tribune, August 2008:<\/em> Long-time observers of public debates about environmental threats know that skeptics about such matters tend to move, over time, through three stages. First, they tell you you&#8217;re wrong and they can prove it. (In this case, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Climate isn&#8217;t changing<\/span> in unusual ways or, if it is, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">human activities are not the cause<\/span>.&#8221;)\u00a0 Then they tell you you&#8217;re right but it doesn&#8217;t matter. Holdren <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/articles\/2011\/11\/white_house_involved_in_warmist_smear_campaign.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has ties to Ozone Action<\/a>, the enviro-activist group that apparently operated in some kind of <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/OA-docs-obtained-by-OA-Gelb-1024x733.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">side-by-side association with Gelbspan<\/a>; Sheppard links to Desmogblog in her article, the web site Gelbspan says he &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/sciencepope\/ross-exposing-coal-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>sort of founded<\/em><\/a>\u2019, she interviewed him directly <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070202021124\/http:\/\/gristmill.grist.org\/story\/2007\/1\/29\/172546\/539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a year before<\/a>, and she is currently <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Gelb-KSheppard-FB-1024x768.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook Friends with him<\/a>; van den Hove&#8217;s PowerPoint presentation about Exxon&#8217;s &#8216;shifting positions\u2019 is taken from a page in her earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/van-den-Hove-not-hap-2001-1024x289.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2001 schoolroom case studies<\/a>, which is only one page after <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/van-den-Hove-Gelb-1024x744.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a citation of Gelbspan<\/a> (full text <a href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.upf.edu\/~lemenestrel\/IMG\/pdf\/climatechangeb.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>); Epstein, who supposedly was <a href=\"http:\/\/gelbspanfiles.com\/?p=745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the catalyst<\/a> sending Gelbspan into an investigation of skeptic climate scientists&#8217; funding, is quoted in the Billings Gazette article right alongside Gelbspan, plus the article also links to Gelbspan&#8217;s web site at its conclusion; and, FAIR&#8217;s Gordon cites not only Gelbspan and Epstein, but also Ozone Action&#8217;s Brandon MacGillis.<\/p>\n<p>Then we have Gelbspan himself, June 2000:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; people like Fred Singer, Pat Michaels and Dick Lindzen speak in sweeping absolutes. At first, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">there was absolutely no global warming<\/span>. Then there was absolutely no connection between global warming and extreme weather. My impression of the skeptics is that they have no fear of anyone examining the insinuation.
